I usually get pinched and end up with a nice blood blister every time I do some type of reload training with my pistol just when I start to pick up the pace and get into a groove. I really did a number on my hand tonite!
I was running the “1-Reload-2” drill and got the nastiest reload pinch I have ever gotten:
Notice “chunk-o-meat” stuck on the mag base plate where it bit me:shout:
I completed the drill after getting bit, but I admit that I let out a screech when it happened. It added about 2 seconds to my average time on the drill.
I tell myself every time that I will tape up my support hand next time I train pistol to protect my support hand palm. Ooops, I forgot again!
I had the same problem with the 1911, and wicked-bad with the Glock 19. Now I shoot G17 mags in the 19 pretty much exclusively to keep that from happening. On the G19 I’ve even pinched the strong hand heel with the G19 mags, which really sucks.
i’ve never gotten pinched on that part of my hand, i usually get it on the bottom of the gun hand or the meaty part of the pinky. it happens to me at some point with just about everything i shoot. once this happens i will not be so aggressive in driving the mags home.
This is a valid point to bring up I think. I have become over-reliant on the auto-forward slide releasing during my reloads which works about 9/10x for me. Im gonna try to un-train myself from slamming the mags home, and start using the slide stop lever.
Same here - I pinch strong hand heel pretty regularly. I even had a re-do grip reduction on already reduced G19, hoping to have my hand higher on that grip. No luck…
G17 mags are good idea, Rob.
it happens to me partly because my hands are rather on the large size. i was doing a demo for a group a few months ago that run sig.229’s and low and behold during the speed reload demo the meaty part of my shooting hand pinky got caught between the bottom of the frame and the top of the mag base plate, it left a nice blood blister. i showed the group i was instructing what had happened and told them to be careful driving the mags home. by the way i saw a few stars when it happened( i survived).:o
Man… I just wrecked the skin on my pinky today doing something very similar. I was wrapping up my range session and went to slam my carry magazine into my carry Sig and… forgot to bring my pinky out of the way. The magazine slid in, locked, but my skin was smashed between it and the frame. I stood there staring at it, in disbelief. Finally ejected the magazine and that’s when the blood and pain came rushing in. It bled most of the afternoon, not a fun time.
That “Chunka-Bunch” probably hurts more now than when it happened. Never did that myself but then again you can probably reload a lot faster than I can… I have to practice this procedure and it ranks right up there with learning Nunchaku’s in my teens… It’s gonna hurt a few times before you get it right…
Speaking of breaking skin: I did accidentally send the slide home, while I was trying to rub a small piece of carbon or something off of the feed ramps once.
I have developed a habit of training with tactical gloves on. Started with carbine training and worked it’s way to pistol.
It’s a good training issue. I’ve had a few trips to the range damaged by just the same kind if injury. I’d hate to spend big bucks for a weeks training just to enjoy it less by this situation. So I’ve learned to run the carbine and pistol with gloved hands. Has no effect on the non gloved function of the gun.
I have found the best gloves to use don’t come cheap. Well worth the expense. A hot barrel can cause similar issues.
