Another law made in an effort to protect the stupid.
Not sure if I like this or hate it. I don’t live in a hurricane prone area, but we do house evacuees in my town when they are forced to leave. The way I look at it, people should have freedom to do as they wish, BUT, police officers in Texas (and I assume elsewhere) are sworn to protect people, even from themselves. SO, if they are putting themselves in imminent danger by remaining in the path of a hurricane, then we MUST protect them. We do have a law on the books in Texas that if you go around roadblocks, and have to be rescued from swift water or whatnot, then you are required to pay for the cost of your rescue (helicopter fuel aint cheap) but we do still have stupid people driving off into swift water every time there’s a flood. My question is…when they arrest you for not evacuating…where are they going to take you? The jail that’s also right in the path of that Category 5?
How can a law like this be justified in any way ![]()
I empathize with the sentiments but let’s observe it’s abuse (or perhaps it’s intended use). The National Guard will be brought in and they’ll have enough to arrest those they run into and any stadium can be used to house the violators temporarily.
Taking the lawmakers at face value I agree it is a law for the interminably stupid.
Texas is one of the states that prohibits Katrina style confiscations of firearms during a crisis, correct? That could interact with this law in many ways, some unfortunate and some humorous. Will FEMA camps be required to accept mandatory evacuees who are loaded for bear?
Hopefully, as those will probably be the safest evacuation camps in history.
