Templar Consulting Free Float Tube

Just picked up one of Templar Consuilting Free Float Tubes. Seems well designed, easy to install, made to be removed quickly allowing easy barrel swaps, only have it on a 5.56 barrel right now but I am thinking of adding a 300 ACC to my collection. Just thought I would share.

Here it is installed, no accessories yet except for the MBUS. Will be adding a AFG and a light of some sort, probably a TLR2. This is a STAG Carbine Length Rifle that I have gone through and updated the parts to.

Here it is with the rail removed using two allen screws

Here is the rail

And the barrel nut

Going to run some rounds through it next week.

That looks pretty light, have you had a chance to weigh it? Is there any anti-rotation mechanism? Are the built in QD sockets anti-rotation?

He has the weights listed on his website, I did not weigh it, but it is much lighter than my YHM that I had on it previously.

The anti rotation is via two ears that engage the bottom of the upper receiver and then tighten down on it as you tighten the two allen screws that draw it down on the barrel nut.

Damn it. Every time I am ready to settle on a specific rail, someone comes along and posts a new brand or style I’ve never seen. Hmm I like that a lot.

When you say swaping barrels, do you mean to actually “quickly” swap the barrel on the upper receiver? Could you clarify that.

Sorry missed this question. Yes you can swap barrrels. Just undo two allens and then you slide the rail off exposing a knurled barrel nut. Undo it and barrel is off swap calibers or length and put rail back on and you are ready to rock.

Gas tub can be left in place while working the barrel retention nut so that tube and barrel come off/on as a unit?

Pix kinda give that impression, but Playboy gives the impression that no girls photos need be touched up with an airbrush to look the way they do…

Yeah, it’s a nice rail setup, but the part about quick barrel changes (“in minutes”) leaves me a bit skeptical. Just never viewed the barrel as a part one would change often or need quick change access to. They also mention substantial caliber changes. Seems an entire upper would be in order here.

Yes the gas tube is not in a hole in the nut so literally you remove the rail and one nut and the barrel is off.

I know 50 beo and acc blackout can easily be swapped to with just a barrel and bolt. Maybe grendel too?

Make it real easy to clean also.

He had a full auto 50 beo when i was in his shop. Real sweet rifle.

Not sure on weight but is way lighter than the yhmc one it replaced. Made well and supports a local business so i got one.

By anti-rotation, I want something that stops the rail from rotating via a block that touches the receiver, not the barrel nut.

It looks to be about an ounce heavier than the Centurion rail system (insignificant) and more expensive.

Also, does anyone really “Swap barrels”? Why not just buy a new upper?

the anti rotation is not from the nut but has ears that engage the receiver to prevent rotation.

This rail looks pretty much the same…

Maybe a few differences in the machining of slots vs. circles in the hand guard itself ,but the barrel nut and the 2 clamp bolts at the bottom of the rail are the same

sent Bob a note I think he is involved with a patent disput with another person, this maybe the one he is fighting with. Does look to be the exact same thing.
