I mean TEC 9

I am posting this truly in reference to a friend. He is unsure if a family TAC 9 is registered or not. The firearm is capable of full-auto fire and will be given to him in the next few years.

My question:

  1. If this firearm is full-auto and not registered, what are the options?

Would you try to have it converted to semi and go about your day?

I am trying to offer advice but not having ever owned an NFA piece, I wanted to come here for those in the know.

The tec9 is a trash weapon and not worthy of trying to reconfigure into a legal, semi auto gun.

I’d part it out and trash the illegally modified components.

That is very good to know, thanks. I don’t know squat about the guns and my buddy has told me that his father-in law is giving him one that is unfired and in the box. I just warned him about NFA laws and to make sure the gun is actually registered.

Unfortunately, I need to tell him that the gun is not worth a lot.

I now have one final question.

Assuming that the firearm is transferrable, what its value be? I was told it’s in the original box and unfired.

After you have said this, I doubt it is select fire.

It is probably semi auto.

People don’t just “come into” or “stumble upon” transferable machineguns that are new in box.

Does it have a stock attached to it?

If this is true, there are no options. It is contraband and cannot be made legal.

That is what I had initially thought, but wanted to ask those who know. I am aware that this all boils down to actually finding out what the legal status of the firearm truly is and go from there.

Then it is most likely a semi auto.

The full auto ones came with a stock from the factory.

The early TEC9s sold to the civilian market fired from an open bolt. They were not full automatic but semi auto. Because they fired from an open bolt they were easy to convert to full auto. Early M11/MAC10s also fired from an open bolt and were just as easy to convert to full auto. I would remove the magazine, make sure the weapon is clear, then pull the bolt to the rear. If it locks open without the magazine in it your friend may have a problem. These were the early models, later models fired from a closed bolt and would require more effort to convert them to full auto.

One of my buddies had a TEC9 and I thought it was pretty fun to shoot. Unfortunately the TEC9 fell victim to gheto gunsmiths and has become another “Saturday Night Special.”
