Teach me about the Smith and Wesson ''E'' series 1911.

A valid concern (as usual).

All mass produced 1911 manufacturers are going to have a lemon come out (or 10). The gun is ONLY as good as the particular gunsmith that built it that day (and not all are equal).

I have seen 10 million more positive E series threads than I have seen bad. Pretty good odds for a sub $1,000 dollar 1911 IMHO.

Most of the positives I heard were very early on but I agree it has the potential of being a very nice 1911 for the cash. Personally I think they really need to focus on the extractor… They seem to be doing so but only time will tell if they can secure it properly for hard use.

No, it was just me being hopeful that I could convert it. But I’m almost 100% sure they will. They already make 9x19mm 1911 pistols.

Gotcha. I speak to S&W a lot and will start to plant the bug in their ear (as I would like to see them make this gun as well).

So when I get one, I’ll have you to thank. :D:cool:

The scandium, bobbed carry frame, with 4.25’’ barrel, and melonite finish (or whatever their using) is IMHO maybe my favorite of their lineup.

Would like to Bump this old thread. Anyone out their put a considerable amount of rounds through these? 10-8 did a review and never really followed it up.

I have about two thousand rounds through mine with every type of ammo possible. It’s been 100 percent reliable - no ammo related failures at all. Although the plunger tube worked loose so I bought a press and reinstalled it and it’s been good ever since then. I thought the wood grip panels were a little too wide for me so I thinned them down with a belt sander and now the gun is just perfect. The tritium sights are the brightest I’ve ever seen. The safety is a little snappier or harder to snap into fire than my Wilson or my Kimber CDP - that’s my only complaint, which is really minor. The finish is getting a little worn and glossy but I have to say I’m really happy with it.

Thanks for the reply/update.

Holy necropost Batman!

Reading back some of my earlier posts confirms that I was super retarded for the first year that I was here.

I assume your not a fan of the E-Series 1911’s form S&W?

I never ended up getting one. I was actually referring to other posts I made. This made me start looking at threads from 2011. Lol.

I here you. Some of my earlier posts we’re too pretty either. As far as a basic 1911 goes, I might try the Ruger. A gunsmith friend says its a good solid basic gun for the money and the local restrictions I have to deal with.

I would love to see one of the SW1911’s around here that wasn’t from the custom shop. Have never seen an E series, relatively basic model in a local gun store. Not planning on ordering one cold.

I bought the basic E-Series 1911 that retails for around $750-800. Fired it today. Not one single failure with any type of ammo or magazine. I used 230gr ball reloads and 185gr flat point reloads. The 185gr loads choked up my Colt, but not the Smith. I used Springfield, Colt, Metalform, Checkmate, and Tripp mags. All 100%.

Funny that you mention it. I just took delivery of the same damn thing! I’m very pleased to hear this report and, after I get a chance to get it to the range, I’ll either comment here or start another thread.

OH Yeah, Hey FT.,
you got the Smith & Wesson eh, good for you and Congrads., Lets us know how she shoots for you too…

Peace Jeff

Yep, pretty excited to give it a run. Should have a chance this weekend unless work calls. First 1911.

My E series rail has over 4k of 230gr rounds through it. No issues other than the plunger tube coming loose. Easy to fix. The pistol has become my wife’s range and bedside gun. She shoots around 300 rounds a month through it now. It is a solid performer, not a Ed Brown or Wilson, but really good for the money.

I’m going to get more rounds through it before I say much -perfect reliability and impressive accuracy thus far- but there is one area I wanted to comment on.

The sights on the “E” series basic model are the nicest on any pistol or revolver I have. Solid metal, great sight picture, a joy to use.
