According to their rep at Shot this year, Taurus makes most of the industry’s 1911 forgings, including some of the big name brands.
that’s what I wound up doing?
I regret that for the amount of money I spent, I could have had a Colt, but then I don’t think I would have taken a Colt apart and learned how a 1911 is supposed to work and how they are put together.
One of the first handguns I ever bought was a PT1911. I got a steal buy on it in the last hour of the last day of a big gun show (should have been a sign I guess). It wasn’t a bad gun, it shot fairly reliably and straight. If you wanted to pump rounds through any old 1911 platform just to get yourself used to it, it may not be a bad first investment ( to upgrade later). For mine though, it ended up getting stolen a couple years ago out of my car by some piece of shit on the block. Moral of the story? Use comprehensive insurance policies and upgrade to Springfield! ![]()
Say what you will about Taurus firearms,I can just say they have forced several American firearms company’s to walk the line as far as price point.
Years ago I had a PT140 that went bang every time, so I really can’t say anything bad about them.
I understand ENLIGHTENED one. Lol.
I think of Taurus as a POS but to each their own.
Taurus revolvers are generally plagued by machine marks in the cylinder and poor timing. Not my cup of tea. They don’t even come close to Smith or Ruger in the revolver category.

When you open up a Taurus and compare it to a S&W its amazing how rough they are inside, machine marks and burrs a-plenty.
When someone sold a Taurus it was a running joke to see who could guess when we’ll have to send it back for repairs or defects. Their 1911’s were especially defect prone.
Where do you find out about police trades? I do look on local classified sites though.
Due to my prior experience with 2 different Taurus pistols, my bias against the manufacturer runs quite deep. Both were semi-autos in case any were curious. I do apologize to the more fortunate Taurus owners if my statements sounded like personal attacks; I hope you won’t feel like I’m bashing YOU per se.
I agree with others that posted that for a little to no extra $$$, a person can find a much better alternative (in my mind) via the new and used market. There are a plethora of alternatives out there. Examples are Glocks, XDs, M&Ps; you can find a lightly used one for approx the same coinage a new Taurus would run. S&W J-frames can be had as well.
No matter what, good luck with whatever you get!
At the local Bass Pro shops the have all the Tarus pistols on the bottom of the display. I asked on the people behind the counter why why they do that, he said that Tarus sucked that’s why they are displayed like that.
With 1911’s requiring such a high degree of precise handfitting in order to function reliably, I’ve never understood why Taurus decided to sell their version.
The people on this site are utter fail. Know it all gun snobs with absolutely NO real experience with the firearm in question.
I have shot many PT1911’s and have personal owned 2 of them. One was PT1911ALR .45 and the other was a PT1911AL(which I modded for the hell of it)
ALL shot flawless out of the box. Alway hit what I pointed at. very smooth running. Only thing I highly recommend, is an upgraded hammer. Stock one works fine, just sucks its ugly and locking it with render the pistol useless(a feature I hate on any firearm)
Here my PT1911ALR

Track records exist for a reason.
And how many thousands of rounds have you put through it?
Those on this board are not the only people who think that Taurus pistols are garbage. If I recall correctly, many smiths wont even work on Taurus 1911s.
You are wrong, I have made head to head comparisons (both table top and extensive shooting), with Taurus M66 vs. S&W 66, Taurus PT92 vs. Beretta 92 and Taurus PT1911 vs. Colt 1911 Series 80. My first hand experience tells be Taurus sucks and I will spend the extra cash and buy guns I can depend on. I especially wanted the PT92 to work out because I much prefer the Browning safety over the Beretta’s Walter style, but I’m not going to kid myself about the overall quality differences. Also my buddy had a Raging Bull 44 mag, that thing was a turd and didn’t hold a candle to any of my S&W or Ruger 44s.
Just because you got two winning lottery tickets does not make Taurus a great gun. As Salad stated, track records exist for a reason and as far as I can tell Taurus’s is well deserved.
Yeah I’m a gun snob, for some reason I like shit that works. Sorry to be such an utter failure in your eyes, but hey continue to rock on with your Taurus and I’ll continue on with my Glocks, Colts and S&Ws.
You’re completely right. Your example of one far outweighs the many other examples of Taurus’ being garbage. We apologize for doubting the Brazilian wonder pistols, and may God have mercy on our souls.
Ive had great luck with their revolvers but matginal luck with their semi autos.

Gratuitous assertion = Fail
Ever heard of Dale Carnegie? Thought not.
This is much like the “which car should I buy?” thread where many steer the guy away from Chrylsers and towards a Honda or Toyota.
There is always that ONE GUY that has an older Intrepid that has gone 100k miles and not been in the shop. The guy swears everyone else is nuts and that it is best to buy the Chrysler and skip the Honda or Toyota.
Whoopie for you…but your experience with the Taurus 1911 is like the 100k mile Intrepid…NOT the norm.
I have a Kimber 1911 and the damn thing has been problem free and I like it but I know damn well it was a total fluke and that Kimber is not a 1911 brand to be recommending to everyone.
A few random cases of trouble free products does not come CLOSE to out-weighing the tons of troubles many others have in Taurus products.
…fail my ass! LOL
