I am currently awaiting my custom 20" bull barrel. i did specify 1/2x28 threads to mount a muzzle device, as IMO an AR platform just does not look right with a target crown barrel. Is there much of an accuracy difference between a comp equiped vs a crowned barrel? all else being equal
There can be. Muzzle devices can have a negative affect on accuracy. Which ever device you decide to use, do not over tighten it. Doing so can distort the bore. With careful mounting, I’ve gotten good results with an A2 birdcage on my precision AR
Take a look at the Wilson Accu-tac FH, I have had good experiences with it on precision rifles. No negative impact on accuracy.
I have heard of extremely good results with the smith vortex for precision builds.
IMO you would want to ensure whatever device you use balances gas flow out of the bore. Any comp (A2, etc) produces uneven gas flow by nature.
I did some accuracy testing with a Levang Linear Comp (now produced by DPMS I believe) on a 22LR that produced some favorable results. It’s internal geometry may help to strip gas flow away from the bullet, which may help with accuracy.
There is also a new device called the XB5 made by Dlask in Canada that may work well, but I haven’t had time for accuracy testing with it yet.
When you say favorable results do you mean better than without a muzzle device?
Like Clobbersaurus I’ve had good results with the Levang(DPMS) Linear on bull barrel builds.
With that said… most of the long range precision shooters I know are using 24-26" bull barrels with target crowns.
Yes, tighter groups then without a muzzle device. These types of tests are very hard though, there is so much subjectivity, the fatigue of the shooter after shooting so many groups being the largest part. I was shooting ten round groups, 9 groups per target, to try to determine if there was a difference with it installed.
All that being said, I had an 11% decrease in average group size with the Levang.
