I have a question for those of you who try a lot of different magazines.
I already have plenty of PMags and USGI mags but a friend told me about a local dealer who has Tapco mags at $16.00. They are supposed to be the standard 30 rd, aluminum teflon coated with green followers. Does anyone have any experience with these??? They may not see a lot of use due to using my other mags for now, but are they worth buying or am I just asking for trouble?
Honestly, I dont own anything Tapco and do not go to thier site and I was a little surprised that they even produced AR mags.
I just picked one of these up locally and it seems to be very solid, the follower doesn’t tilt at all. It appears to use a one piece molding process and appears generally well made.
I’ll see how well it performs before getting any more though.
Wow, I had forgotten about posting this question!!! Oh well, I decided to just stick with what I know works (or at least what has been working for me), USGI and PMags. I am however going to pick up one of the 922r AK-47 trigger groups for my AK but that will be my only Tapco purchase.
FWIW: My brother bought some of Tapco’s new composite AR-15 mags yesterday. They’re very similiar to their AK mags in terms of build. The followers are pretty nifty.
I’m interested in these, and want to hear how they worked for him at the range. I didn’t buy any, because there’s a shop pretty closeby that still has PMAGs.
That being said, after loading the Tapco mag, I was impressed with its construction, and what seemed to be tight tolerances. Time will tell on these mags, but my initial impression was that these were more like PMAGs than ProMags. YMMV. I fed one into my S&W M&P-15, and it locked in securely, and released smoothly.
In short, I wasn’t ready to gamble on them at the shop, especially considering the availability of PMAGs, but upon getting back to my brother’s house, and giving them a once-over, I was pleasantly surprised on the build quality. Tapco may have made a step forward on these. I’d have to do some T&E on my own, but I’m curious to see how these things perform.
*ETA: I’m shocked to see these have a chrome silicon spring, something I did NOT expect to see from Tapco.
I completely agree with the above, but look at the entire product line. There are certainly reliable, proven and available magazines out there made by companies whose reputations have not been built on the concept of “their cheap.”
