Does anyone have experience with Tactical Rifles? I am considering having them build a precision rifle for me and they seem to claim a more accurate rifle than any of the usual suspects. Turn-around times are better too.
Tac Ops Rifles usually come with a test target of less than a 1/4in or so. Only bad thing is I think Mike has a long wait (a year maybe??) The guys at Sniper Central seem to hold these as top 1 or 2 when it comes to Precision Bolt Guns.

ETA - You might take a look at GAP rifles as well. http://www.gaprecision.net/
Tac Ops and Tactical Rifles are not the same company.
Anyone familiar with Tactical Rifles? http://www.tacticalrifles.net/halfmoa.asp
what is the application of your precision rifle…if consistant .25 groups on paper are what you are after, then a sniper rifle is not what you need.
Just to clarify, you got Tactical Operations confused with tacticalrifles.net?
I shoot a Tango 51 and we have 4 Tango’s and 1 Delta. The MOA guarantee is made with the understanding that this is with 168gr FGMM ammo. The rifles are easily 1/4MOA capable if the shooter is doing their job.
Indeed Mike is a very busy guy and order time or fix it turn around time is a long wait. We had a rifle re-barreled and turn around time was around 8 months. I am hearing that new orders are around 14 or so months to fill. These are damn fine rifles and I have yet to see another with as slick of an action.
Since the confusion happened I might as well chime in.
I have aTacOps Tac51 (My own specs) it is easily the most accurate rifle with factory 168 Federal Ammo I have ever shot. On west coast they are pretty plentiful in LE Snipers Hands. I have seen many very small groups from these rifles.
GAP makes a fantastic rifle also and I have won many a match with GAP. No need to take any side here. Both are better than anyone who will shoot them.
Now I wont point fingers but seems to me many a guy blames equipment for own shooting problems. Most of the rifles on the market are far better than the shooters who have them.
PRG lets not do the what website says what thing? Many times its who pays the bills who gets the play on a website, so always best to just report first hand info.
On Tactical Rifles. I have seen the work and talked with them. I would not hesitate to buy from them.
One thing for group size. Never take a FFP scope for shooting groups unless it has one very fine reticle. The P3 SxB’s will cover too much of area and never give you ability to hold under .25moa. I use either my NXS 5-22,8-32,12-42 or a Permier 5-25 with fine Gen Two to shoot groups.
Back to shipping US Military slings before I ship out this week. Have fun.
Thanks for info gentlemen.
This is good to know, I’ve also been bitten by the precision bug and have been looking at options.
They sent me a catalog/price list and called me several times to talk about what I want. They seemed very professional and are obviously willing to work hard to get business.
Perhaps .25MOA is a stretch for a claim, however all 5 of our Tac Ops rifles and every other one that I have seen is .25MOA capable with FGMM. I would not expect Federal to make any such claim from their GMM ammo.
For myself I would not personally pay this kind of money out of pocket for this rifle as my Rem 700SPS tactical is a consistent .5 to .75MOA shooter out of the box. My partners SPS tactical with a stock swap and bedded is a consistent sub .5 MOA. And as you mention we are nit picking at this point. On the other hand, from my own personal experiences, I am not that comfortable with 2.5MOA being acceptable.
I do shoot with a few benchrest types and they are often not happy that my tactical style tango51 will keep up with their bigger dollar rifles.
I suggest anyone with delusions of 0.25 MOA rifle guarantees contact SSA Buford Boone at the FBI BRF to put that myth to rest–Federal 168 gr GMM, as good as it is, cannot consistently hold to that level of accuracy even out of a rigidly mounted test barrel assembly, let alone out of rifles. Tac Ops rifles are beautiful, however, I have direct first hand knowledge of three Tac Ops rifles that did not shoot any better than a decent Rem 700 PSS; eminent LE armorer Don Lazzarini can verify this, as he has been asked to check several Tac Ops rifles owned by officers in this area.
Wow
First off I have more experience with either Tacops or GAP than most including Doc combined. Mine is first hand.
Before I get deeper into this I think for those that have no clue as to anyones background its best to put a little of it out there so folks dont think we just read this stuff and rehash it like it was first hand knowledge. Also since Doc basically attacked my claims it needs to be said. I have no financial agreement of any type with either TacOps or GAP.
Me simple really. In my 3rd decade as sniper/sniper instructor, working with LE and Military. Member of 2009 US National F TR Rifle Team (Won Gold and Two Silver Medals at 2009 Worlds plus some US and UK National Evenets/Matches) I am one of the Two Team Captains for 2013 US National Team. Current US Military Contractor. I worked with GAP on first Rock Rifle build. I love my GAP Rifles. I love my TacOps Rifle
That is only important because all those rounds down range have taught me some simple things reading alone wont. A rifle is a tuning fork and find the right mix of components and position and you get best sound out of it. Best sound being smallest groups.
Now my F TR Rifle is built to load bullets out long and a specific load will scream sub .25 moa groups at velocities that would make your head spin. It does this because bbl, chamber and throat are cut same way each time. George/GAP has done that for me many times and I tell you last four bbls he did all run same freakin load to within .2 grains to get best accuracy. Its taken alot of time and effort to come up with the perfect winning combo but it was worth it. I have my rifle and ammo tuned perfectly.
Dudes that GAP F TR shot 12 X’ and 150 out of 150 at 800 yards in high winds, at Worlds This year, to win a Gold Medal. That X ring is a five inche circle.
Switching to Sniper Rifles TacOps has done with rifles what I have done, but built his LE Sniper Rifle around the ammo available. He designed everything in his rifle build, including his chamber reamer for Federal GM 168s. He then takes every rifle out and shoots it to make certain it will do just what he claimes, .20 moa or better. If the rifle does not do so he takes it apart and reworks it. He only makes this guarantee for the Federal 168s. Now I have shot my TacOps with six different lots of Fed 168s and all shoot sub .25 moa groups for me. I have seen no less than six other TacOps rifles, owned by various folks all do the same. Tacops is designed for LE use and he built the rifles to be as accurate as they could be with ammo most LE agencies use. TacOps does what they claim.
Understand this Mike will tell you dont fire 118LR in his rifle because chamvber is not right for that round. Doc you want to call BS on this show up with cash in hand, but be advised I am off to Sand Box this week again so it will have to wait. Tell you what lets set it up for the area snipers to watch. I will get several snipers to do so not just me.
Now switching to GAP. George builds Field Sniper rifles for most part. His rifles are designed to work with every sniper round out there. I have taken his rifle that shot .50 moa or better with available sniper ammo and had then shoot sub .25 moa groups with hand loads tailored to the rifle. They shoot very well and I would not hesitate to bet my life on one.
Tacops is the most accurate with FACTORY AMMO and best fit and finish of any sniper rifle I have ever shot. Thats a fact and not after only shooting one or two rifles.
I wont get into names of folks because I dont know all the back grounds. No judgement on what anyone supposedly said. I would prefer to hear direct from them as I prefer guys ask me and not say what they think I my have said myself. I do know this:
I am a LE Armorer and from the many classes I took I have become a glorified parts changer. TacOPs and GAP are Master Smiths. Big difference between simple armorer and master smith.
The FBI Stats mean little to folks that almost or died because of FBI Stats, such as the the 9mm 115 grain Silver Tip being the wonder bullet, that cost many using it thier lives. BTDT so I turn to USMC and US Army for Sniper Knowledge
Federal 168s shoot sub .25 moa groups at 100 yards all the time in Tac Ops rifles. Not Myth its FACT.
By the way if some of this seems harsh its because other posts where taken down that basically attacked and its about time guys knock this type of stuff off. You talk out rump and you hurt a business because you have head screwed on side ways. Neither GAP or TacOps deserves this junk on net.
Doc,
I hold Don in high regard and count him as a friend. Also, he as has done some great work for me. But, there is a semantic difference between showing someone your rifle and asking them to “check it”. I hope that my rifle is not one of the ones that you are referencing.
There are four of us at our Department with Tac Ops rifles. The last rifle built was an M40A1 for a former 8541 and it certainly does what Mike R. claims it will.
OK, point of reference from where I am coming from with experience behind the Tac Ops rifle. Full time SWAT unit of 50 guys with a major metro PD. 20 years LE, 12 years SWAT. I am one of 2 lead Cadre instructors and am a currently a counter sniper. I have multiple firearms instructor certs including no less than 3 precision rifle / sniper instructor certs. I also hold a several armorer certs. I have been behind and issued most of the top notch rifles and I do quite a bit of for fun benchrest shooting and have quite a bit of time behind many custom jobs. Currently I have 5 years behind my Tac Ops Tango51 and out of 7 snipers assigned to our division we have 5 Tac Ops rifles.
ALL 5 of these rifles are easy .25 or better rifles with 168gr Federal GMM ammo. Everywhere we take these rifles, we make believers. I know one of the Magpul fellas is a member here perhaps we could ask him. My group size with this rifle made T.H’s jaw drop. I don’t think he wanted to believe it was an actual 5 round group.
Provided I am doing my job, it groups like this day in and day out.
I have no gold medals however. ![]()
George, not yours.
Mike, I absolutely believe your rifle shoots great and you have vastly more experience with Tac Ops rifles than I do. Quite a few people I know swear by their Tac Ops rifles. I have seen many beautiful ones, as I stated above. On the other hand, there were a couple that had problems that I saw; Lazzarini has also seen some that had problems. Every manufacturer has a few issues–I trust Mike Rescigno will do the honorable thing, stand behind his rifles, and make things good in any case where a customer has issues.
I do know quite a bit about ammunition–as stated above, Federal 168 gr GMM OTM, CANNOT consistently hold 0.25 MOA when fired out of a rigid test barrel assembly. The only way to scientifically test a 0.25 MOA claim, would be to take 10 random rifles, place them in machine rests, and fire 3 x 10 rd groups from each rifle using the same lot of Federal 168 gr GMM OTM, in the same exact environmental conditions, then average the groups from those 300 shots. If anyone wishes the share the results of such a test, I am quite sure we will see that it is not physically possible for 0.25 MOA to be held with that ammunition.
I can shoot under .25 inch groups with 150gr Hornady SST, all day long. All three rounds touching, and sometimes through the same hole. I shoot a Rem 700 LTR, factory. Don’t get me wrong I love high quality weapons, and Tac Ops is good, but you don’t have to spend that kind of money to get those results at 100 yds. High end rifles shine at long range, like 800 yds plus. I am just being the devil’s advocate here. Besides we have all seen hillbillys with Savage rifles shoot sub 1/2 MOA before. You can talk about all kinds of weapons and ammo and spend all kinds of money. However .25 MOA or better out of a Factory $500.00 rifle is the same as .25 MOA out of a $3000.00 rifle, right?![]()
Doc I do understand what you are saying about the FGGM ammo. I am not also saying that every group fired is within the .25MOA claim or better. Now that is often attributed to shooter, environment and ammo. Indeed the FGMM ammo cannot be thought to always be able to produce .25MOA results even from a vised action. However this is more attribute to the arrow as opposed to the bow or the Indian. I am more than comfortable in saying that our Tac Ops bows are .25MOA capable with the right arrow and Indian behind it. ![]()
Now that is an accurate statement!
This has become stupid with several good guys arguing over nothing that a phone conversation would not have fixed. I am sorry for my involvment in this.
Doc, when I get back lets throw my rifle in a vice and see how it does for ten three shot groups in mechanical rest with several different lots of ammo. Not a challenge; let’s just see what it does and maybe we can then have the lunch we talked about a few times.
Tac Ops is hands down a kick ass bolt action platform. I drive a Lima-51 myself and it is just ridiculously accurate. Anyone who wants a “real” bolt rifle, contact Tac Ops and get in line!!![]()
