Lately I’ve been taking advantage of some to the advances in textile technology. I picked up some moisture wicking undies (don’t laugh, I’m never going back to 100% cotton, not with the heat/humidity we get), some UnderArmour running clothes (I know I’m late to the party on these but man I’ve been missing out), and my Marmot M2 softshell which has become my favorite jacket ever. That said, what’s out there in the way of denim that incorporates “performance” fabrics? I’d like something that offers a bit more freedom of movement, and better breathability. Construction hasn’t been an issue with my Levis but I’m not going to balk at something that’s more robust. So far all I’ve really found has been some skateboarding specific stuff from Quicksilver (http://skate.quiksilver.com/products/) that incorporates Coolmax denim and I’m interested but I’d like to know what else is out there that I may have missed.
I’m really looking for denim, there’s plenty of choices for “khakis” in that arena. But I checked the mfg’s website to see what else thy had and they do have a pair of jeans but it’s pretty standard fare unfortunately.
I did run across some softshell “jeans” though from Thunderbolt sportswear but they’re $188/each. :o
I like the Carhartts also. Last year I picked up a cheaper choice: Dickies at Walmart. Don’t laugh, they were like $17 and have been pretty good. They don’t have the small pocket on the left leg like the Carhartts have.
Bigger leg openings (Dungaree cut), cut more athletic in seat & thigh.
Durable like Levi’s, way more pockets.
I carry baton / flashlight in left leg pocket & two cell phones on right side pockets, several knives at times in various pockets as well. No real printing issues either.
The cotton duck come in colors so while similar to Polo / Dockers, Khaki’s, 5.11’s etc. superior in pockets and generous cut for running, kicking, scalling walls / fences, reppelling etc.
The black, midnight blue, black, moss, mushroom and dark brown are best colors and an easy clothing match for easy versatility etc.
I’ve worn these at work for about 12 years, they last 6 to 8 months.
Carhartt makes a set of knee pads that slide up between the layers, I have used them while trimming out electrical outlets and while they are not perfect, they do help when you kneel down on a sheetrock screw. They offer some protection without limiting movement.
The right thigh pocket will fit a P-Mag, but I have found that pocket sizes are inconsistent.
I’m with Hop on the Carharts and the matching shorts. Great room, comfy, MANY colors and different weight denims & pocket for clipping knife and light on each side. Double thick knees you can actually put knee pads in if you want. I do wear them out in the ass for some reason:p
I have a full size Browning Hi-Power tucked in a VM III in these photos. I for some reason puut my light in upper pocket there is a slim pocket on one side for knife and the same on other for light.
Here is at a 3Gun Match in CO. Photos courtesy of FromMyColdDeadHand
I have a fleece tucked in the pants they actually fit much better than they appear. This is the Carharts in motion
I also have synthetic Big Wall climbing pants that are the tuffest pants I own. No photos. They can pass for nice travel khakis, but move well, water resistant and indestructible… will not wrinkle and are stain proof ( I got some sort of bug in Namibia that had me crappin in my britches for 2 weeks and it bleached my Patagonia shorts and left these looking brand new:eek:) Heavier weight material resembles the look of cotton. The brand I have were used by all the climbers at Yosemite, but Prana ripped off the design and put them out of business. I have not tried the Prana version yet.
Carhart, but these Gray and Tan. The double front in blue jeans look too gay cowboy for me.
+1 on the knee inserts. Just enough to take the sting out of kneeling on a sharp rock, screw or something small.
I actually got a pair (?) or bib overalls for working around the yard. Double front knees with the pads and no more plumbers crack when I’m weeding. Trying to figure out how to put some MOLLE on it for 3-gun matches.
Bib overalls? Sounds a little too DELIVERANCE for me:p I did notice most of the shots you took are of my butt?
Overalls, Hmmm…Then again you might be able to carry a carbine concealed in them;) (I don’t want to hear about the carbine you already carried concealed in them either:eek:)
Best part of you… After taking pics of matches and classes, it is really hard not to take a majority of ass shots without breaking the rules.
I was thinking that I could just clip a box of 12g shells to the top pocket and load for Zak’s Zombie stages. OR put velcro all over the outside and just stick stuff where I want to try it out. The primary draw of the overalls was that I could shed them before getting back in my car. My wife is complaining about me bring half of PWSA’s range home with me, plus I have a new ride and it is PIMP.
Not going to get to a real range on the G-trigger for a bit, might slap the 22kit on that lower and play about at the local indoor range on Monday.
As ya’ll can see, the Carhartt brown/tan color mimics what we call ‘dirt’ here in Colorado.
For one of Zak’s shotgun stages you need a bandolier of shotgun boxes:p
I hope this thread does turn up some non-cotton more hi-tec pants that do not scream ninja. I need to go check out the latest climbing pants and see what they have these days.
Congrats on the new rig! I’ve got a new rig too only its green and got a deere on the side… I’ll bet mine is bigger than yours
