I have been debating about which optic to get for my new Colt 6920. I think I have decided on the Trijicon TA44SG-10 over the Aimpoint T-1.
How many out there with this ACOG are mounting it on the carry handle as opposed to the getting a mount like the LaRue?
Do you like this mounting set up? Seems simple enough to me and would save me $100 by not having to buy the mount.

I have done a post elsewhere on my TA45-2 (1.5 x 24) ACOG which I like immensely. I have it on the fixed A1 style carry handle of my Bushmaster carbine* in the same way that you are inquiring about.
It works like a charm. I had been thinking about it when I had a chance to try one mounted in that fashion in the store and bought the optic on the spot. The mounting height turned out to be perfect, and the eye relief in mine is 3.6", even more than the 1.5 x 16. There is no way NOT to get a quick sight picture, and no problem to do it in offhand, sitting, or prone. It’s incredibly flexible and forgiving, and FAST. IMHO it’s really the perfect optic for a carbine, and I think a well kept secret. If there is a down side I can’t think what it is. I have the amber triangle but that green dot/circle looks even better.
*I owned a Colt SP1 CAR back in the 1980s; my BM with minor tweaks runs every bit as well so I refuse to accept second class status! 
I run ACOGs on several carry handles as well as on flattops. Yeah, the flattops have a better cheek weld setup, but that’s not the whole story.
First, the only sight I would run on a carry handle is an ACOG, largely due to the exposed position of the scope and the likelihood that it will get a few bumps – ACOGs can take that kind of abuse.
Second, I have an ACOG TA44SR-10 on the carry handle of a Colt R6530, and it is my “go to” carbine. The “chin weld” enables, or rather, forces a heads up position and I find I can see my surroundings a lot better than with a flattop. Keeping a sight picture is no problem. In the long term, the position may be a bit more fatiguing than cheek weld, but I do not anticipate spending that much time looking down sights without a break, and I have not yet had that happen to me.
That Colt also has an A1 stock, which provides a better set of eye relief choices than an A2 or a fully extended collapsible. It also gives me the reliability of a rifle-type buffer on a carbine length weapon.
If I were to change this setup, I would do exactly what Dienekes did and go for a TA45 with a triangle, or maybe a crosshair, reticle. His statements about eye relief and picture are right on.
PS. I don’t care about what people say about crosshairs and rapid sight acquisition. The larger crosshair reticle provides lots of ranging and lead help, and those big black lines give you a fast way to frame a target box at approximate distances. For example, my TA50 (lousy eye relief) will give me a 3" box at 21 feet, without looking at the lighted center cross – that’s just candy!
I run one on an old Bushmaster carry handle. It works well BUT I have a CTR stock with the stock riser doohicky that more or less fixes cheek weld issues. It is quite fast. I think it’d be suboptimal with anything but the smallest ACOG. The -44 is so narrow that IMO the difference between the line of sight in a conventional setup with a lower-third cowitness and a carry handle setup is kind of minimal. Maybe .6 or .8" of extra height over bore…? Something like that, anyway.
