I’ve been considering a .308 can for a while (it will do multi duty on a .308 bolt gun and several ARs in 5.56, 300BO and .308) and recently saw SWR is releasing the .30 SpecWar. I had been leaning toward the YHM Phantom (probably the soon to be released LT version) but YHM’s muzzle devices leave me wanting more. The SWR mounts look to fit what I’m looking for and SWR has a great reputation for quality and service. Anyone have an opinion or experience with the SpecWar 762 (or 556)? I’m especially interested in opinions of the mounting system.
That’s a nice way to put it.
There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the SpecWar, but I personally like the SF Socom a ton more after getting some hands on time with it. Easily the BEST mounting system out there. High cost though.
You are at least off to a good start looking at mounting as the most inportant variable, because with a rifle can, it absolutely is.
If I was on a budget… I’d wait and save up to buy the best for me. If I knowing was going to make concessions from absolute top of the line… Here is my list of QD for semi-auto choices in exactly this order:
- Surefire Socom
- Silencerco Saker Series (no 762 can yet)
- SWR SpecWar
- AAC 90T (not out yet)
- Surefire Legacy
- AAC 51T (with intention to modify to be tight)
- Gemtech Halo
- Maybe braised or really tight thread-on
- Gemtech Bi-Lock
- YHM
- No-Name QD
I wouldn’t go down further than #3 because the SWR does actually seem like a really good deal. It’s the same company as Silencerco, so there is a good chance that the new modular Saker cans will accept the Specwar mounts at some point, meaning you’ll be able to switch between two lines of cans.
The AAC 90T looked really good, until I thought about those tiny little teeth getting damaged. The Socom and Saker are really generations ahead of external teeth. Plus that line seems to be at least another year out most likely. They haven’t even shipped some product from last year’s SHOT…
My 1, 2, and 3 picks are priced in that same order. That said, I have no hands on with the Saker or Specwar mounts, they could be awesome or horrible for all I know.
Short version… Specwar >>>>>>>>>> YHM
I am waiting to pick up my SWR Specwar in a few months: both the Saker and the Specwar use the exact same mount.
Uh… You sure about that?

Because the Saker has no teeth like this and I remeber at least the prototypes did not have acme threads.
It looks to me like the Saker can be adapted to use SpecWar mounts but has more options as well. The SpecWar seems to just use their ASR mounts.
“can be adapted” right, that’s what I thought. You could buy a Saker and not use the Saker Mount but rather use the SWR mounts
It comes with the Trifecta mount
I could be wrong about this… If I am wrong, please someone correct me! But iirc…
Trifecta mount to Silencerco only means 3-prong. The 3-prong “trifecta” for the SpecWar is NOT the same part as the trifecta for the Saker. Even though they are both called “trifecta”.
It’s pretty dumb. Because its also “creatively” named with RS which is “resonant suppression”, so: 3 prongs of different length. But let’s not stop there! There is also the “MAAD” modular part of the Saker and there is also “ASP” mount which is I think is the teeth on the Specwar mount that the Saker does NOT have.
The Specwar has external teeth all around the outside of the mount like AAC. The Saker uses 4 indexing notches and tightens down on those, sort a-like to how the latest Surefire mounts work (sortof).
In summary, the saker will most likely have the modular part to accept the Specwar mount as well as its native Saker -style mount (again, no external teeth), but no, the saker mount is not the same as the SpecWar mount.
This is all as far as I know, certainly could be wrong. Oddly enough for a company that calls “3” by “trifecta”, it is surprisingly short on wording for more important aspects.
I am currently looking into getting a specwar 762. any word on being able to find a mount for ak? they also have a muzzle brake rather then a flash suppressor for the specwar right?
Yes, there is a brake mount. I ended up buying a SpecWar 762 and have the brake in hand while the can is waiting for approval. I’ve only seen 1/2-28 5.56 and 5/8-24 .30 mounts listed. Nothing with AK type threads. With SHOT this week maybe they will announce more.
Man, I really hope so. I don’t even have a .308 at the moment but have an ak, and plan on a .308 ar and bolt gun in the near future. So I was hoping I could get the versatility of being able to throw one can onto all of them. I have searched all over the internet and haven’t been able to find anything. I know a few people who will be at shot, I should ask them to keep an eye out for me. I just wish I knew whether they would be coming out with something, because if they don’t plan to I will need to get something other then the specwar
I have a 5.56 Specwar, and it came with the Trifecta mount. I wasn’t able to get a brake until this summer. ETA on my 7.62 Specwar is approx. Christmas 2014 or hopefully sooner, and I ordered the brake with it.
The 5.56 Specwar hooks-up very solid on the Trifecta mount, and I expect nothing less from the brake.
As far as mounting to an AK goes, I’m sure that there is an adapter available or one could be made.
yeah I don’t doubt that. but incase something were to go wrong, I would feel much more comfortable getting something from the manufacturer
Can you elaborate on this at all? SDN6 on the way and I’d like to know more about the 51T inadequacies.
This is the correct answer.
No love for AAC I see. To each their own.
You can finally throw the 7.62 SilencerCo Saker into this mix.
1.5" shorter, 4 oz lighter, more mounting options but $400 more (about 50%). Interesting
