I have a Colt 6920 and currently run a Eotech on a RRA Dominator2 mount. Our agency had a few TA01’s laying around and I figured I’d try one out to see if I like it.
I’ve never shot a “scoped” rifle and was wondering about mounting of the TA01. I see in the picture thread most have the rear of the sight in line with the charging handle. Is that the standard mounting point?
I like to shoot with my nose up on the charging handle and the stock closed down on the first notch. I have no idea about eye relief etc.

I switched from an Eotech to a TA31TRD this christmas, and it took alot of practice to adjust to the change. I use my ACOG with both eyes open and have my exit pupil slightly forward of the CH. I feel I get a better field of view with it a tad bit forward without sacrificing too much. The TA01 and the TA31 have real short eye relief about 1 1/2 inches or less so they can be unforgiving if you are not used to the optic. For anything out to 100yds I rather prefer the Eotech, but from 25-30 yds and out to 3-400 the ACOG takes it. Thats why I run the TA31TRD with mini red dot on top to use for the shorter range shots. Hope that helps a bit.
Thanks for the info, but after looking through the TA01 last night I’m not sure if I like the reticle. I work at night in a urban area with a lot of ambient light and it was pretty hard to see the cross hairs going from dark to light areas.
That and I would have to switch to new BUIS setup and I’m not sure if I want to spend the money if I’m not happy with the TA01.
What about an Eotech w/a magnifier, how does that compare w/a ACOG at 3-400 yds? Im considering a 3x magniifer w/a 552, or a TA01NSN. (FWIW, I read the 3x magnifier is really 3.25x, and the 4x magnifier is really 3.75x magnification).
The ACOG TA01/TA31 only has about 1.5" of eye relief, which can make the scope difficult to see through if you’re wearing body armor. The rifle I currently use right now has a TA01 with a VLTOR modstock. When I drop from the MRD to the ACOG I sometimes really have to crane my neck forward to obtain proper eye relief.
Anyway, I’d recommend that you mount the ACOG as far back as possible. For me, that’s right in front of my flip up BUIS.

With any scope, be sure you check the eye relief from kneeling and prone since that’s where you head is naturally most forward. Being in full pucker mode tends to pull things in closer as well. Hopefully it’s in a QD mount so you can move it around and find what works best from all positions.
The reticle on the TA01NSN is indeed very fine and could be hard to pick up quickly in some situations.
the TA01NSN is excellent for precision shots, the BDC works great up to 600 yards. eye relief and FOV are great. I shoot ntch and 1st hole on buttstock. Combo works great for me.
you can always add a docter optic back up on top for close shots.
ta01 nsn with dr optic on top has worked well for me in the past. all the guys from my last team including me rand this setup all the way to the rear without iron sights.
I had a Eotech 4x mag on for a short time. I just could not get used to flipping it up and back down, plus it took longer flip the mag up and line up my shot vs adjusting my cheekweld to look down the MRD on my current setup. The other problem was the magnifier added too much weight to an already hefty AR. So I sold it to a buddy of mine. I work with a guy who runs the Eotech w/ 4x mag set up and loves it, so I guess it depends on the shooter and what you will be comfortable with.
I think I’ll at least qualify with it then decide what I want to do. Maybe I’ll run the Eotech while I take the TA out to the range and get used to it.

Not of it’s the factory mount with the 2 thumbscrews on the side like my mid 1990s TA01NSN. There is just no way to tension it exactly the same (my experience is about two or so inches off at 100).
A QD mount like the LaRue or ADM should work much better, however.
The TA51 mount will absolutely hold zero, but it takes practice being consistent with remounting. Apply forward pressure to the optic before applying full tightness, snug it just past finger-tight. Witness marks.
That said, the above remains true. A quality throw-arm mount will make it a simpler process. No more potentially random tensioning.

I did test the RTZ of a TA51 on my range qual (not my fault).
I could hit the same spot at 500m - the TA51 is a very high quality mount, and it’s the last optics mount I own that will be replaced by an LT/ADM/Bobro unit.
