Anyone else having issues finding Soviet/Eastern Bloc surplus 5.45x39? I shoot an AK-74 and I know that more than a few of the member on this forum have 5.45 uppers.
I’ve been meaning to pick up another case or two, but the supplies seem to be depleting rapidly. Probably batshit insane Mayan Doomsday Preppers and most likely temporary. I highly doubt the US market for 5.45 could ever come close to depleting this. The Soviets probably made hundreds of millions of rounds of it.
My ammo pusher, Dan told me he gets his from Ukraine who still uses the 5.45 caliber. Why are they selling this stuff anyway? Every can I have opened has been pristine and functioned perfectly. The shortage may be due to the pending election. How well I remember the panic buying of 2008. By the way, what the heck does 7N6 mean?
7N6 is one 5.45 variant, the one that was originally used with the AK-74. It sends a 53gr projectile down range at 2,887 ft/sec out of the 16" barrel of the AK-74. The reason why this ammo is being dumped on the open market is because it’s old. Eastern Bloc countries do this at fairly regular intervals, I believe it’s sold off if it’s 30 or more years old.
According to SGAmmo, there will be some more in a few months. I’m going to pick up another crate of it soon and then wait on another big shipment. I’ll have 5,400 rounds then, more than enough to last me for quite some time even if I buy a 5.45 upper.
