Surefire x300 powder burn? and E2d as every day carry?

First question,

is anyone experiencing powder burn on the top of their x300 bezel…mine is mounted on an m&p 9l and over about 2k rounds the bezel at the 12 o’clock position is now aluminum as all the finish (not sure what kind) is removed…i wasn’t sure if this was normal or not? i have never seen a weapon be affected like that in a short amount of time.

I called surefire and of course they said they dont warranty cosmetic claims but i would think the finish wasn’t applied properly from the factory for it to be removed so quickly especially on a m&p longslide where the light is almost behind the barrel versus in front.

Second question

Does anyone carry an E2D executive defender as an EDC? mine is coming in the mail today and i was wondering how it would fair in a pocket or holster setup? or any cons/pros of the light that people thought of

most of mine have a healthy coating of carbon on them. On the few that I clean; I haven’t seen any kind of finish wear like that occur.

1,500 rounds since installing the light and no finish concerns. I am using mainly Federal ammo.

Finish wear from muzzle blast is a norm. The extent to which it wears depends. If you’re not happy with it, hit it with a coat of krylon. If it’s an exceptionally low number of rounds or short duration of time, you might consider sending SF a pic and seeing if the response changes.

Regarding the E2D: My E2Ds or E2D LEDs have been EDC for years. The lights themselves are GTG. The scallops in the bezel will wear through some materials, choose how you carry it with that in mind.

I called and talked to surefire and they said ot send it back adn they will look at it but the customer serv. rep said in most cases they dont warranty finish issues…but yea ill take a pic and post it when i get home.

I can’t wait to get home and open the E2D…it looked big in the picture but i think it should work well

I’ve carried the E2D and E2DL for almost 6 years now. I loved the E2D Incandescent, it really throws a blinding light, but the bulb is a bit fragile for a light that’s supposed to be used as an impact weapon. I had to switch bulbs more than once even though the light had only been carried, not even used much. When the LED came out my incan has been delegated to drawer duty (I am looking for aftermarked led drop in kits to give it a second life though).

Go with the E2DL, you won’t regret it.

I have a TLR-1 mounted on my G17. I’ve found that applying a very light coat of CLP or other gun oil to the lens and housing before shooting allows me to wipe away carbon deposits after a day of training. There’s going to be some build-up, particularly with relatively high round-counts, but it’s not anything to worry about.

I’ve had the same happen with my X300 that I have mounted on my M&P 45 FS. there’s a silver spot on it where the paint has little-by-little been charred off after about 1,000 rounds. I didn’t bother calling SF though. I’m actually in the process of trying to find the best type of paint I can get to touch it back up. I’m sure it will happen again, but I just really like that light. In the end though, it’s a tool and it’s gonna get beat up. So I’ll try not to get too Martha Stewartish with it.

My X300 has some wear marks on or around the bezel, but it looks to be more from drawing/holstering the weapon. All good tools have wear on the finish if used properly.

As far as the E2D for EDC? I have an E2DL, great light typical SF quality but the bezel got on my nerves so I sanded it down quite a bit. Other than that, it’s a great EDC.

As far as the x300 question goes I honestly don’t have enough rounds through mine to give an opinion but I can say the bezel on the e2d can dig into your side a little. Fyi, I carry mine in my left front pants pocket. My temporary fix until I get the funds for an lx2 is to use my m600 scoutlight head on the e2d body. Problem solved and much brighter!

I do the same on the work TLR-1 and on my X300. Although I managed to wear a little finish off on the X300 when cleaning it after the last range trip, but the lenses clean up great with a little oil pre-firing. Now it just looks used, like its supposed to be.

I have X300s on both my work Sig 220Rs and they each have just over 7K rounds on them. I have no such finish wear under the muzzle. I do have wear to bare metal at the 6 o’clock position from drawing and holstering.

That seems like a pretty low round count to have that type of wear. However, as others have said, if you use 'em, they won’t stay pretty. I don’t even bother touching that stuff up, but to each his own.

If anything, it reminds me of the well worn stuff that I saw on the salty cops that I first worked with and I get a little nostalgic. Sorry, sentimental moment over.

I ended up getting an email from surefire about the x300…and well 3 erasers and 3 hours later it was all gone…apparently that is burnt on carbon and it really resembles bare aluminum.

I have also been carrying the e2dL for the last 2 weeks in my left front pocket…light works great, even had to use it when my gf’s car broke done, the thing really lights up under the hood lol.

I am gonna swap out the clip for an lx2 clip and see how well it works

Wow. I would have never thought of that. I’ll try doing the same tonight. Why did it take you 3 hours? Was it rough work, or did you just have alot going on?

it was really rough…and i started using a big eraser…and well the one ona pencil worked alot better.

I’m running a Surefire X300 on a Sig P220 stainless Elite for my duty weapon. The black finish at the 12’o clock position has some wear from muzzle blast. No damage to the lense.

I put some oil on the lense prior to practice on the range so that I don’t get carbon build up. Some wear from muzzle blast is normal.

We need to remember that our defensive gear will become worn with routine practice.

Here are some pics of my X300 after just 129 rounds on my new MP9 fullsize. Prior to the range trip, the bezel was almost good as new.
I tried to wipe off most of the powder residue and was left with what you see in the pics. I kinda like it.

Gives it character.

an eraser will fix that lol

Update: fired around 100 rounds yesterday. This is what happened.

The lens is still ok (wiped it down right after we were done). I’ll probably just put some tape over the bezel next time I go to the range.
