I intend to purchase a Surefire P2X Fury (EAG) or Surefire P3X Fury (EAG) to replace the existing cheapo Streamlight PolyTac on my patrol rifle. The $80 price difference is not a significant factor. I’m hoping some of you have hands on experience with both and can give me some solid advice. After researching both way too much, my primary concerns are the size/weight of the P3X and the run time of the P2X. Whichever I get, it will likely not be replaced for a long while.
It will be mounted in an IWC SMC mount on Magpul mid-length handguards (BCM mid-length, lightweight) used primarily on patrol, possibly occasional search warrants. Thanks a lot.
I have a P2x Fury on one of my rifles and it’s been great. The extra output of the P3x is nice, but apparently it’s drops considerably in the first couple minutes and is not all that much brighter than the P2x, if I’m not mistaken.
Pat Rogers had a couple p3x’s on some rifles for students during a recent shoot house class. The guys that ran them had nothing but good things to say about the extra output. There’s a couple threads about it on Lightfighter.
I agree with that. 500 lumens has been perfect for me and I certainly don’t need more. I’d be willing to try the P3X, but don’t have a need and prefer the size of the P2x.
The thing I’ve heard about the P3x is that it drops to about 700 lumens within a couple minutes. There’s a very knowledgeable member on Lightfighter, Precision Works, and he has posted a ton of info on lights. So, considering the new 600 lumen P2x Fury’s, I don’t think it would be worth it.
But I have zero hands on experience and am basically talking out of my ass at this point. Two years ago, I thought 200 or 250 lumens was enough and 500 might be too much. Now I can’t see going back from 500.
Thanks for the input fellas. Despite the attraction of the P3X’s longer run time, I think I’m going to go with the P2X primarily due to it’s smaller size/weight. I like to keep my rifle as light as possible and going from 4.1oz (PolyTac) to 5.7oz (P2X) is quite a bit less than going up to 7.2oz (P3X). And the extra length of the P3X would put it pretty close to the muzzle…perhaps close enough to get all mucked up like my pistol light.
The sooner BCM gets these in stock the sooner I can stop second guessing myself. Thanks again.
Had this same discussion in briefing the other day with a couple of other guys. None of us have a p3x, most of us have p2x fury’s with some of the g2zx combatlights mixed in. A couple run p2x’s on their patrol rifles, and those guys are very happy with what they have. I run a m600 ultra and I love it. I think 500 lumens is fine for the majority of what we do. I haven’t seen the sun in a long time and work deep nights. In our AO, when we dismount with a rifle id say 70% of the time its for entry into a building, 30% for perimeter or something outdoor. If I worked in a more rural environment where those ratios were flipped I might feel differently, but what we have works fine for us. I do have an M3LT-s and I can tell you I quit taking it into buildings. I don’t remember the specs on its output but I want to say its in the 750 to 800 range and has a pretty solid “hot spot” that gives me more feedback than I want in a residence.
I have ran the P2X probably since it’s been out on my rifle. I have put a few thousand rounds through it and no problems. I started off in a VTAC mount, and switched to a Haley Strategic mount for it. It’s been a solid light, never had any issues and the beam dispersal is great for my line of work… Larger urban cities, working in narcotics so I’m always in nasty trap houses and such.
