Are the shims needed to keep the muzzle brake aligned if you plan to mount a suppressor? Or if the MB times right without shims would it be ok with just rocksett?
I’ve never had a brake time 100% perfect… but would have no problem not using them if it did time correct. You don’t need the shims with their flash hiders (unless timing for aesthetics or to prevent dirt blowing up while shooting prone).
No shim is fine if it times. I personally will go to the trouble of timing a mount so the job looks professional.
Cool, had the SF MB installed on my 11.5 but it was a little canted, so I took it to a gunsmith I actually trust, he timed it fine without any shims, not sure how but he did… He used the shims I had on my 14.5 when installing it there. I had contacted Garin (Kudu22) about it but I think he is on vacation, glad to hear I should be good to go.
On a side note, the original install made the SOCOM cans SUPER tight but after the 14.5 was installed and the 11.5 reinstalled they go on and off no problem.
My 308 timed up without shims. No issues but my SOCOM 7.62 Mini’s are extremely tight on both 7.62 MB (one on the 308 and one on a 300 blk) but fit just fine on my 5.56 FH. Might be calling Surefire on this one.
Have you shot them yet? I’ve found they get easiest to install/take off after the first couple range sessions.
Odd, when I had the muzzle brake on my 11.5 installed originally (timed incorrectly) shims were used and 2/4 of my SOCOM cans were VERY tight. Now that it’s been reinstalled it is much easier to take the cans on and off and my 14.5 the cans come off effortlessly after unlocking the ring.
How would shims make any difference with can lock up? They don’t make contact with anything?
I thought I remember reading if shims aren’t used there is a possibility of the mount & can not being concentric, thus risking baffle strike.
Shims do not matter one way or another if the brake times without it and has proper torque. If my brakes timed with no shims, I would run it like that all day long. Shims have no effect one way or another on can lockup. Period. Nothing on the can even comes close to contacting that part of the barrel or muzzle device. Also, timing your MD has no effect on baffle strikes. For instance, most flash hider suppressor mounts don’t come with shims, some do, but, you can time brakes 180 off (AAC’s brake for instance) with no effect. Shims are simply supplied with brakes/comps so you can time your device so the ports line up properly when not shooting suppressed. The index slot on Surefire cans is so when its mounted in the same position each time, it keeps a constant POI. Nothing to do with baffle strikes. Turn your rifle 90 degrees and shoot it. Now your brake ports are vertical. Shoots the same… doesn’t matter one way or another to your suppressor.
