Opinions please: is the Surefire G2L ($69) worth the extra $ over the Streamlight PolyTac led ($35)? Why or why not?
Light will be mounted on an Ar. I am not leo or military so will be used for shtf and or home defense only.

The PolyTacs are pretty new so I am not sure anyone will have much feedback. I will say that generally I have been pleased with every Streamlight product that I have owned however, I do find that the switches are more robust on Surefire products. It seems that if something (other than the batteries) is going to go bad at the worst possible time, it is the switch.
Does that mean the PolyTac won’t work? Nope. In fact it will probably be fine. It is just untested at this point. Streamlight is a good company with EXCELLENT customer service. In fact I find that their service is much faster than Surefire’s service.
I would prefer the G2L because 1) I know it works and 2) I like it’s balance of brightness and runtime (80 lumens is sufficient so I appreciate the extra runtime).
I’ll have to agree with Matthew. Surefire makes a good product and they’ve got a good track record behind them. There’s a world of replacement parts, mounts, and customization options made for the various Surefire lights.
I got to ask, how could Surefire service be any faster without employing psychics or using next day air to ship things back and forth?
Every time I called them they answered the phone with in a couple of minutes. They have a solution for my problem quickly. And they ship quickly.
I have had 3 instances where I needed replacement parts from Surefire. The first time, I needed a new bezel and it was handled very quickly. The 2 other times were for E-series tail caps (E-series clicky tail caps were/are problematic). It took several weeks for them to ship the replacement tailcap the first time I had an issue and the second time I never received a replacement. I called once to ask when/if it was shipped and then I didn’t pester them a third time since I went ahead and tracked down several discontinued momentary tail caps for my E-series lights on my own dime.
I have had two run ins with Streamlight. One was for a PolyPro that had a worn out switch. They shipped a brand new light the same day. The other was for a SL20X switch that gave up the ghost and they shipped a replacement switch that same day.
So in my experience, Streamlight is faster. That said, I still run Surefire because I still believe that they are the most reliable, best made lights on the market bar none. Surefire will always take care of things and that is comforting.
I would recommend the Poly-Tac. Every manufacturer has issues. I have tested Surefire vs Streamlight and prefer the 120 lumens of the Poly-Tac vs 80 lumens of the G2 LED.
I have over 1,000 rounds in both my AR rifle set ups and no trouble, but I’m not worried either as I know they have a lifetime warranty.
I had a SF L4 mounted previously but the Poly-Tac has better light output.
If I want to spend $135.00 I can upgrade my SF L4 to 120 lumens to match but why? I can buy 3Poly-Tac’s and be good to go. Remember - SF & SL don’t make switches or LEDS they buy them from manufacturers based on their specifications and build their lights. These lights are both good quality but for my money & my opinion as I have tested go with the Poly-tac LED.
$70 is high for a G2L.I’ve never paid over $60(usually less).
The run time killed any interest I had in the Poly-Tac.I’d much rather have the loss in lumens with 4x the run time. The G2Ls have always been bright enough for my EDC/nightstand purposes.
I’m already invested in G2s and compatible parts/mods anyway.I think I have 5 now…Not counting those I’ve sold or given away.
Robert what kind of mount are you using with the poly Tacs? Are shims required?
And thanks for all the replies guys.
I have my Poly-Tac in a Viking Tactics mount, no shims required even though it does come with them.
I have attached a couple pix of my mount.
Nice looking setup. Thanks for the info and pics.
