I am researching the ability to suppress an AK in 7.62x39mm. I’d like to hear your recommendations on specific suppressors to use and rachet-based flash hiders. I was thinking the AAC 762-SDN-6 with the Blackout 51T FH combo would work well. Thoughts? This would be on a Krebs Custom AK-103K with permanent FH. Thanks!

The AK can be suppressed, but I am not sure if it is the best platform. The AK’s action is exceptionally loud and it seems to have alot of port noise/blast. I had a Saiga 308 that I had considered suppressing but in the end I elected not to.
As for muzzle devices - you could also look at the YHM QD mounts. While not as elegant or svelte as the AAC offerings, they are significantly cheaper and very sturdy. Of course, this would involve a YHM suppressor as well.
The other caveat was to make sure the barrel has concentric threads. As your rifle is a Krebs they probably did a decent job with the threading, but it never hurts to check.

I did it to my Yugo underfolder with a Gemtech 308 suppressor.
With Wolf ammo and with the gas port open, it was loud.
With subsonic ammo and the gas port open, it was loud and a pain in the * to chamber the next round.
With subsonic ammo and the gas port closed, it was quiet. But then again, it is basically a straight pull rifle.
If you want to suppress a 7.62x39, I would think about getting an AR in that cartridge.
Do you think the “loud” was coming from the little gas vent holes in the gas block (or gas tube, if your was the vented type)? I wonder if securing a clamp or section of steel pipe or something over that part of the gas block would eliminate the ‘loudness’ you mention.
96 SS, who did that thread job for you? I’m assuming the suppressor mount pictured shoulders on the remaining bit of the threads that’s still present in front of the front sight, correct? I’ve been looking for a gunsmith that would be willing to do the same thing to my SLR-106 so I can mount a thread mount can.
I had an AKM with a PBS1 suppressor last time I was overseas. The PBS1 is by no means a state of the art suppressor; actually, it is quite poor.
While from the shooters point of view it seemed loud (using supersonic ammo), from a short distance away it sounded completely different. It sounded more like someone clapping two pieces of wood together, or hitting a two by four with a hammer.
While not exactly stealthy, from a medium distance it did not really sound like a gunshot to me. From a military standpoint, I can see some benefit to this. As a civilian, I would be disappointed with the cost to quiet ratio.
The other issue to consider is thread quality and bore concentricity. Make sure and have your muzzle attachment or threads installed/checked by someone reputable who understands the issues of suppressing an AK.
That is a perm’d SF SOCOM FH done by Marc Krebs himself.
Barrel was pulled, cut, crowned, threaded 1/2-28 and the SF FH permed, the FSB was moved back and pinned after it was also cut down.
My gun (Sako M92S) works perfect suppressed with a reflex can (BR Suppressors Scout TR8). It cycles super- & subsonics with 100% reliability. Subs I have shot are handloads with Lapua D166 bullet with about 2 MOA groups at 100meters.
There’s nothing to do with flight noise of the supers, but it is still pretty quiet IMHO. With subs most of the noise comes from the clickety-clackety of the BCG moving back and forth. Here’s a comparison video with different rounds:
In my experience 7.62x39 suppresses extremely well. Word of caution with East European barrels though! The hole in the barrel may not be concentric with the outer surface of the barrel! This means that there is a possibility of a baffle strike if the threading is not made according to the actual hole of the barrel, but the exterior surface.
I have a Elite Iron can on a Draco pistol and I think it suppresses pretty good IMHO no ringing of the ears and I’ve been using Wolf and Lapua with a red dot on a cut down ultimak makes a great backpack gun here in the middle of nowhere.
