So since my Form 1 is on the way and while I await the Switchblocked 10.5" barrels to return Im wondering if I should send my BCMGunfighter charging handle back to Brownells so I can get a Gasbuster charging handle.
Anyone run the block and a PRI? Or the block and a standard CH?
I have no experience with the switchblock but wanted to mention another option, the DIY Gas Busting Charging Handle as brought to us by our very own USMC03.
Im my limited experience shooting a 10.5" and 14.5" switchblock suppressed, I’d say keep the BCM and buy ammo with the difference. I didn’t find it no where near as bad as my 11.5" Colt suppressed WITH the Gas Buster, shooting either Noveskes that were equiped with the BCM offering.
In regards to Jeff’s DIY gasbuster. I for the life of me cannot understand why Vltor/BCM did not cut a small slot on the top side of the charging handle and insert a rubber seal to do what Jeff did. It wouldn’t cost them hardly anything to do during the mfg process.
An ideal setup would be as I described above and have a small cut in the upper receiver with a small rubber seal that mates to the bottom side of the charging handle.
But with the switchblock, and some AR’s that are set up to run suppressed only, it is really not needed as they aren’t near as bad being overgassed.
You still need to RTV your charging handle and such to avoid gas face. This is because suppressors also cause chamber blow back… and that’s also why piston guns will also stop running after 2K rounds with a can attached if you don’t clean out your lower.
Most i’ve ever run is 800 in one sitting (Magpul Carbine 1 and 2) and the lower gets gunked as hell.
Personally, I prefer using a BCM charging handle with RTV, and an AR Gas Vent. The AR Gas Vent’s just a vent shaped like a forward receiver, and vents gas forward and away from the shooter.
My buddy and I both ran M4-2000s on 14.5", carbine gas weapons for a recent class. He used a PRI M84 Gasbuster, I used a RTV’d BCM and Gas vent.
I’m thinking that the problem with the PRI is that when the gas blowback gets to the rear of the upper receiver, it is just as inclined to scoot under the charging handle and get onto your face, as it is to go out the vents machined into the PRI. By putting a gas vent in, blow back has a place to escape before it gets to the rear of the upper receiver.
