Supplements to lower blood pressure

Obviously not smoking/using tobacco, losing weight, diet & physical activity will all help.

I’m wondering if anyone has any advice on supplements in addition to the above to lower blood pressure, and what they use.

Are there any study verified supplements which lower blood pressure?

Not sure but I was told I had high blood pressure a while back. I started checking it myself and on every one of thouse machines you see. It was fine every single time so I concluded the nurse was an idiot and when I went back to the doctor they said it was fine.

I know you should cut out salt from your diet that will help alot

If you truly have high blood pressure, limit your salt intake. The best supplements are going to be hydrochlorthiazide, lisinopril, losarten, metroprolol, or diltiazem. If you’re asking what homeopathic nostrum you can find in the health food store, there’s nothing. Liftestyle change and medication, those are your options.

I’d read the Life Extension Foundation protocol on high BP:

http://www.lef.org/protocols/heart_circulatory/high_blood_pressure_01.htm

The possible causes of high BP is wide ranging, and they give a good run down of possible causes and treatments.

Omega 3 fish oil.

Eat right and exercise!

It’s worked great for me and great for a buddy who used to bleed from the eyes his BP was so high.

Semper Fi

Bananas help a lot. I eat one once or twice a day as part of my breakfest. It sounds weird I know.

Not to mention normal exercise. A couple of my buddies suffer from High blood pressure and began working out, reducing sugar intake, caffine, etc.

Among other things, I take Hawthorne berry for high blood pressure. As mentioned above, diet and exercise are going to help the most.

Came into this thread to post this.

There was no “?” in this sentence… That’s why I take the hawtoorne berry!

This is what I was looking for: http://www.livestrong.com/article/30293-lower-blood-pressure-naturally-hawthorne/

I read a book a couple of years ago. Can’t remember the title but it was written from the standpoint of supplements that have actually been studied and have shown evidence of working.

On the blood pressure topic, I take CoQ10 every night. There is “good” evidence that CoQ10 works. A nice side effect is that it tends to help you sleep too. Even if I wake up in the night I seem to be able to nod off again pretty quickly. Not so without the CoQ10.

Not to go on a rant, but every time you turn on the TV it seems like some lawyer is wanting people to join a class action suit for damage that some prescription medication has done.

I’m not saying there aren’t people who will always be forced to take high-powered drugs, but I am 100% convinced that it’s as much about the money as health care.

For example, the prescription drug Niaspan is mostly time-released Niacin. Why couldn’t you just take time-released Niacin?

Wiggity, I completely miss read this post due to lack of sleep! My appologies!

I did some side work for a homeopath Dr. For trade and shes got me on that and some other stuff. I think it’s working great.

Reduce the caffeine intake, take omega 3 fish oils. Try magnesium supplements. Get and keep regular sleep intervals. Can’t tell you how important getting sleep is. Obviously you should cut out some of the fat in your diet, lower your Na intake and get exercise a few times a week if you can. If your high bp is hereditary, you will most likely be looking at prescribed meds.

My best friend was a fat b**tard. Late 30’s Doc’s put him on meds for high BP. Now at 41 he finally got smart, cut the crap out of his diet and started working out. Took almost a year, his BP is normal - Doc is ready to take him off meds. He’s also down about 40 lbs…amazing what getting off a couch and paying attention to food intake will do.

CoQ10

I’ve always heard the effect of caffine on blood pressure was acute, and didn’t last past the effect of the caffine.

Is it a chronic thing?

Because it’s more than ‘just’ niacin. As a side note, there was a recent study that suggested that niaspan has no effect on preventing MIs (as is true with most statins).

For those who can exercise and modify their diet to lower BP, good on 'em. A lot of people can’t. See a doc and stay away from homeopathic/health food store stuff.

Niaspan isn’t a Statin.

Yeah, I was thinking simcor. Apologies.
