This is my first AR build and as such I purchased a complete upper (minus sights and handguard) but the lower was built by myself. I wanted a lightweight all purpose AR that could do anything I want it to do. Originally I was going to just buy one that would work, but the more I looked the more I knew I would change. So I started from the ground up and decided on MagPul for the furniture, looks great and is sturdy.
I have never owned or even shot an AR before so I depended a lot on the online forums for information. I decided to build one to have an all purpose rifle that was easy to personalize and configure to my needs. First I had a magnified scope and later decided that I wanted an Aimpoint so I got the Pro model.
I was really happy when I was offered the 14.5" Chrome Lined 1:7 twist barrel, I really like how compact it is. I started the build in December and just got my upper this morning to complete the build. I have yet to get out to the range due to the weather. Hoping to get out next Tuesday weather permitting.
Specs for the build:
Lower - Superior Arms Stripped S-15 with a Stag Lower Parts Kit, MagPul CTR-M Stock, MagPul MOE+ AR15/M16 Grip and MagPul MOE Trigger Guard, BCM Buffer Tube and MagPul B.A.D. Lever.
Upper - Superior Arms Complete Upper Flat-Top M4 14.5" with chrome lining with a MagPul MOE Hand Guard. I believe the flash hider is a Yankee Hills Phantom but not sure (if anyone knows let me know).
Optics - AimPoint Pro with factory mount.
Let me know what you think of where I mounted the Aimpoint (as forward as I could), I had difficultly in deciding since it really doesn’t say in the instructions. Seems to work fine where it is though.
No back up sights?
Stake the castle nut?
The lower looks good, the upper is suspect. I equate railed gasblocks to the likes of dpms etc. just not a fan, but that’s me.
I did move the Aimpoint where the base lined up with the ejection port, I think it looks nicer. I don’t plan on using a magnifier on it, but who knows.
After you shoot it just check in inside of the upper receiver, I have one of their rifles and the finish came off exposing bare aluminum. I contacted the company and they took care of it and the customer service was quick and I had my upper back in about a week.
Mine is a complete build from them, it has served its purpose as a trainer rifle.
Hope everything works well, have fun and put some rounds through it.
I am glad to hear about the good experience with them, mine has been good despite the wait time. Which I really cannot blame them since they are overwhelmed with orders much like every other AR manufacture.
I would of done a complete build except for the fact that I didn’t want a a stock AR and then spend more money to make it the way I wanted it. Thats the only reason that I went the route I did.
I definitely cannot wait to get some rounds down range, hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday.
