I recently purchased two Sun Devil SD-308 lowers. They are 6061 billet built on the SR-25, DPMS…pattern. All lower parts with the exception of the front pivot pin, bolt catch, buffer and buffer spring are AR-15.
I built one into a 16 inch carbine and the other will be built into a 20 “precision” rifle.
16" carbine (already done)
Ergo 93B stock FDE
Ergo pistol grip FDE
DPMS LRPK
DPMS AP4 complete upper (purchased from Brownell’s. Couldn’t wait for Sun Devil to get all their parts)
Millet DMS scope on a Larue mount
Magpul BUS rear sight
Magpul mags
20" rifle (waiting on parts and some decisions to be made on my part)
Sun Devil upper receiver 6061 billet
Sun Devil BCG (unk manufacture at this time-not made in-house)
20 Lothar Walther barrel
JP Adj. Trigger
Magpul PRS stock (black)
Troy TRX forend (undecided on length/unsure of available lengths)
Ergo large pistol grip (black)
Scope and mount undetermined at this time, but I do have a JP mount laying around.
Magpul mags
I will post picture when I take some and set up a host account. In the interim here is a link to some photos I posted on another forum when I first purchased the receivers.
Thanks, the AP-4 was not my first choice, but the only choice of mine available at this time. It is very heavy. The factory free float tube is very heavy as well and does not have any rails. I am looking for a replacement forend or ways to lighten it, I just haven’t decided which I want to do.
I only have about 200 rounds through the gun and the AP-4 has functioned fine.
Currently the only pics are the pics I posted on UZI Talk. if you follow the link in my first post you will find them. A friend borrowed the gun to test, so I can’t take pics right now.
I did purchase the receivers directly from Sun Devil. In the past Sun Devil’s owner told me he intended to retail a stripped lower for $199.00. I do not feel at liberty to post what I paid as these lowers were suppose to be blemished, though I defy you to find the blemish. One did have a slight discoloration in the anodizing, but once I wiped it with a very light coat of oil it went away. These guns are to be used so I do not care about a slight discoloration or external ding, which neither had.
All I have used are P-Mags and they fit fine.
As to availability I will have to ask. I know they are working on their upper now. Their first upper will not have a dust cover or forward assist. For my “precision” rifle I do not believe this will be an issue to me, however, I will buy an upper with at least a dust cover when they become available and swap it out.
The rendering images of the SD 308 upper lower show a slick upper with the dust cover only. I like the clean look of it and hope they keep the dust cover capability.
It would be nice to see an upper with a dust cover and a shell deflector, but no FA as an initial offering. I see the shell defelctor as a “nice to have” feature, but definitly do not want the forward assist.
From talking to the owner, their first upper will be sans dust cover and brass deflector. He is just trying to get something out there now. I do not necessarily agree with the logic, but it is his company.
The second production upper will have a port cover and brass deflector. The third will have the addition of a forward assist.
I will probably buy the first upper, just because of the type of shooting I am going to do with it and I want to get my “precision” upper built. DPMS has been producing their LR-308B without a dustcover for years and it is not an issue for what most people use the firearm for.
When Sun Devil manufactures their upper with the port cover and brass deflector I will get one of those and swap it out.
