This is my first AR. I pick it up next Saturday and it comes with no sights (DDM4 V5). It’s primary use now will be the range at 100 yrds (occasionally 200). Also the possibility of just plinking at varied ranges up to 50 yrds. My budget will allow up to $1000 with mount. Thank you in advance for your help!
For a decent scope you could look at the burris tac 30 or Mtac. 1x4 good quality and decent optics under $500. Nicer would be a Trijicon 1x4 with mount that will put you closer to the 1k amount. There are many other combinations with Leupold, weaver or many other quality brands. Shop around for your best deal. You may want to better define what you are looking for power wise. Quality mounts such as La Rue, ADM and Warne work well.
Second on the MTAC, and throw in the XTR 1-4, better glass than the MTAC. Check this deal out http://swfa.com/Burris-1-4x24-Xtreme-Tactical-XTR-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P45511.aspx. I cant say enough how good of a deal this is. The Fastfire 3 alone sells for around 250$ and the mount goes for around 80$ and the scope normally sells for about $650.
I had a Weaver 1x6 and it is a solid scope but i had trouble with the reticle being too fine @1x and I couldn’t focus the reticle and the target perfectly @ 5x.
Also the Vortex PST 1-4, SWFA 1x6 and trijicon tr24 are also good choices for your purposes
Ditto on the Trijicon TR24 with the triangle - red or green. Used should go for around $700+. Leaves room in your budget for a sweet Bobro mount.
I bought a second hand Trijicon TR24G and mounted it in a Larue SPR-1.93. It’s mounted on a BCM Recce-16 and I have nothing but good experiences with the set up. In all I think I’m into the optic and mount for a little under $950 if I remember correctly.
There are a plethora of quality low power variable scopes available now, so do yourself a favor and go check out as many as you can. With the amount of different features and reticles you owe it t yourself to find what suits you best.
I sure like the TR24 1X4 with the red triangle and LaRue mount. An EOTech came off the rifle when my astigmatism kicked in.
I have a Vortex PST 1-4 on a 16 mid length, you can get them under $500 on sale and throw in a ADM mount for under $150, and your good.
Right now my current preference for optics on an AR are as follows:
Aimpoint PRO: $380
Vortex Viper PST capped 1-4x24 (and ADM Recon mount): $620
Aimpoint T1 (and ADM/Larue/Bobro mount): $675
I’ve been looking into a Leupold Mk6 1-6x20 lately for about $1850 with a mount.
If you just shoot at man sized targets with surplus or other cheap ammo at ~200 yds or less, get the Aimpoint PRO. It’s cheap, durable, long battery life, and comes with a rail mount.
The folks on here have given me some other ways to go. I was thinking of a Leupold vx/r patrol. Very good info here. I never thought of that tr24.
Leupold VX-R is my suggestion. I have the firedot circle instead of the patrol because I wanted cappet turrents. I didn’t care for the post under the triangle on the trijicon. Good luck with your choice. David
