Suddenly getting tons of spam calls from the same area code and prefix

Has this happened to anyone else? Example: say your number is (101)202-5555 you’ll get lots of calls from (101)202-XXXX any combination of the last four, almost never a duplicate, doesn’t matter how many of them you block, they keep calling from a different four digits. There’s just silence on the other end if you answer.

I’ve always wondered what the hell is up with this. It happened before a few years ago, then stopped for a long time, now it has started up again with a vengeance. I’m getting 4-5 of these calls a day, all with the same area code and prefix as mine and all with a different last four digits, if I answer it’s just silence then hangs up after a few seconds, if I call back it goes to a random voice mail.

I remember when this happened years before, sometimes I’d call back and some random person would answer and I’d tell them they called me, their answer was always that they’d never called me, or sometimes it would be vice versa, someone would call and I’d answer and they’d say that I called them when I never did. This go around, that hasn’t happened yet so far.

So what the hell’s going on? Is this some glitch of the phone system? It’s starting to get aggravating. I’ve google searched it and found a few other reports of this happening but no answers as to why.

I have had a massive increase in scam calls since the election. Half dozen or more in a day hasn’t been unusual.

If you’re number isn’t saved in my contacts I don’t pick up. Leave a message and I’ll call back, otherwise I just click END and block the number

There’s an app called Hiya you can get. Decreased the crap calls SIGNIFICANTLY for me.

If you are not concerned about callers not in your contacts, turn “do not disturb” on and allow only contacts to ring through. I do this if I am on a job and need to make sure only calls coming through are known contacts. This seems to throw the auto dialers off for a bit when going back to running without the “do not disturb” turned on.

I wonder if there’s an app where I can just block calls from that prefix. Every single spam call is from the same prefix as my number, that’s the weird thing.

My best buddy took a call from what was showing as his cousin in his list, but it was one of the scam callers that hacked, or whatever that is called, his phone number.

I’m sure that happens too to some extent. Worse case I’ll just hang up.

I did have a persistent call from the FBI with a Chicago area code. Kept calling 3-5 times a day and leaving messages. I would have been even slightly concerned had they not sounded like Apu. Got tired of it and the next time they called I picked up and talked to an “agent”. He was very unhappy with me and needed my info to do something which I couldn’t understand. I told him to **** off, he told me he was going to arrest me. I told him to come and get it but keep in mind this is the US and my “Arsenal” probably outnumbers yours and I have a shovel I’m not afraid to use!

No more phone calls!

best ever
basically guy getting call fakes he is a detective at a homicide scene and drills the caller about him calling a dead person and now suspect if you have never heard it very funny

It’s called “Spoofing” FYI

I get those calls all the time with the same area code and prefix. Thing is, I’ve had this number for 20 years now, and the area code changed about 15 years ago. So the number I have doesn’t match the area where I am anymore. When I see one of these calls coming in, I know its BS.

I never used to get any junk calls like this. Started about a year or two ago.

Yeah, the frequently-used term is “neighborhooding”. They use software to fake the number they are calling from.

The theory is that you think “Oh, this is from someone in my local area, and I’ll pick up the call.” And it’s actually a scammer trying to sell you an extended car warranty…

I do not know anyone that actually picks up on a call from an unknown number anymore. I sure don’t.

Unfortunately, I kind of have to on my work phone in particular. One thing I’ve noticed it is comes in waves. Like I’ll get a scam call on my work phone and five minutes later, I get a call on my personal one. That’ll go on for a couple of days and it’s quiet for a couple of weeks.

I keep getting the robo-calls for the “Oklahoma Police Association” or something like that. I just state whomever they are looking for is dead. I get this pause before “well, I’m sorry to hear that, but would you be willing to support our organization instead?”
