I need to change out my muzzle device but do not have a set of blocks or a barrel vise… any ideas of something I may have lying around the house that could work to hold it tight enough? I know this sounds weak but I was almost thinking a wet towel wrapped around the barrel followed by a dry towel to keep it from moving but still not scar it. Suggestions?
Quit being a cheap ass and get a action block. Hey you wanted Suggestions!
Lol I know I know but the wife is already mad I bought the new red dot/magnifier to go up top so she’ll kill me!
Make a set out of a couple of blocks of wood.
Think any wood will work?
I cut some V’s across the grain in a couple of 2x4 blocks using a radial arm saw, wrap the barrel with some wet leather. Oak seems to work better.
Clamp two 2x4’s together and drill the seam with a drill bit one size smaller than the actual barrel OD. Now place the two halves around the barrel and clamp in a vise. Holds securely without marring.
I used the two blocks of wood with V cuts and then put a piece of garden hose around the barrel as well to prevent marring.
Geniuses. Thank you all, I am going to do it tomorrow when I get home from church!
An action block isn’t the answer. The idea is to keep from stressing the receiver at the indexing pin by clamping the barrel to remove the muzzle device…
This might sound bad, and was super ghetto, but I wrapped the fsp in 2 leather gauntlet gloves and put it in the vise. Was weird, but efficient! Thanks again guys.
A light dusting of confectioner’s sugar on the barrel before clamping will prevent slipping.
i have not heard that one, i will have to try that.
hardwood usually works better than softwood…it doesn’t compress as readily but still does not mar or scrape.
the leather idea works well, too.

Another one that I’ve used in the past has been to wrap the barrel with a layer or two of a painter’s tack cloth.
I “borrowed” some of those rubber jar opener things from my moms to use in a vise, worked well for me ![]()
