I dont want to rain on your parade, but you should know that the aow stamp is $5 when it is a transfer of an existing item.
To make your own on a f1, the stamp is $200, just like everything else.
Not that this makes it impossible to do your own aow for under $300, but it will narrow down the field quite a bit, if you are counting the stamp.
Eta: also, you cannot legally make an aow from a shotgun or a rifle. If it has ever had a stock, it is disqualified from being an aow.

yeah I got caught up in hyperbole (Read: drunk) and was daydreaming. You’re right after all, but I always understood you could give your shotgun to an SOT and have them turn it into an AOW before transferring it back to you for $5, correct? I understand this doesn’t mean you can make an AOW from a gun with a stock, but still.

Yes, you can give a non nfa gun suitable for converting into an aow to an 07/sot, and they can register it and transfer it back to you on an f4 for a $5 transfer fee.
We have done this for customers with mossberg cruisers to make basically a super shorty.
It was notably more than $300, though.

Am I correct in understanding that you, as the maker, have to engrave your information on the AOW?
Whoever the maker is has to engrave.
OK, so the most difficult part of the conversion isn’t the forward grip installation. It’s the engraving and paperwork.
I’d say the most difficult part is giving the government money on purpose. The paperwork isn’t bad, once you get your head wrapped around it.
Yes, the maker, or manufacturer must engrave the makers info on the gun.
The info would be the name of the maker, the same as it appears on your f1, and the location, which is just city and state. The address is not required. If you look at firearms, its basically the same.
The characters need to be at least 3/32" high and at least .003" deep. So, you cant just scratch it in with an awl.
You can sub out the marking, but new changes in what constitutes manutacturing have made it tricky.
Basically, the marker needs to have an 07.
You probably could slide on just marking, especially if you dont leave it, and pick it back up later.
Also, technically, places like trophy shops arent supposed to “work” on guns. Its gray if you wait for it, but if it stays overnight, the law gets real clear.
Of course, good anodizing will likely defeat most trophy shops gravers. We have a cnc carbide tipped dot matrix unit, and i still have to run over it twice sometimes.

About the only sub $300 aow i can think of off the top of my head would be a pen gun.
Take on of the military pen flare guns, and make a 25acp barrel for it.
I had a customer who wanted one of these. He later changed his mind, but i had figured it up for him. You can get a barrel pretty cheap, and have to thread the breech end.
So, depending on what you pay for the barrel, the lathe work if you dont do it, and whether you f1 it, or get it done and f4 it, you can come in under $300.
Of course, you end up with a single shot 25acp pen gun. Kind of cool, but not a serious weapon by any means.
