Was resizing some once fired Federal .308 and the brass sheered in half on me! I now have the neck portion of the case lodged inside my Die, any suggestions to remove???

Here you go, I did the same thing a month or so ago, this worked in about 5 minutes
I had one so stuck that Lee couldn’t even get it out and sent me a new die…
I think I’d send that one in to rcbs. The stuck case remover linked to above won’t work without the case head attached.
Sorry, didn’t the OP with a great deal of detail.
How about a broken shell extractor? Did the case separate because it was old, or did you use ONE SHOT case adhesive? :jester:
Yeah I seen that tool but figured it wouldn’t help me considering the situation. I just sent an email off to RCBS, will see how that goes.
Well I purchased a bag of “once fired” brass on Gunbroker from a gun store in Las Vegas so maybe it wasn’t once fired. I always lube the brass before resizing.
What lube?
The RCBS lube that came with my kit, is that no good? I am new to this reloading scene.
I don’t think I’ve tried that stuff. ONE SHOT is the usuals stuck case culprit.
Dillon Case Lube is the best for bulk… VERY forgiving. Imperial sizing wax is great for low volume applications.
Thanks, I will check those out.
Go put it in the freezer, while its cooling to shrink the metal get out a drill and tap kit. Drill out the primer pocket and tap the hole for what ever bolt you happen to have in the garage. Now you need a spacer, it has to be big enough to let the case pass through. Put the spacer on the bottom of the die and insert the bolt, turn until the case is extracted.
You could try some sort of penetrating oil, and a broken shell extractor. Or freezing then the broken shell extractor.
More than likely you will have to send it in. If they can not remove it they will replace it.
Like markm said the best case lubes are dillon and imperial. I only use imperial for sizing. I use the wax for the body and there dry for the case necks. Even if i size a thousand cases i always use imperial. I tried hornady’s unique which is like imperial. It works just as good as imperial and it is cheaper.
The only thing i use one shit for is sizing pistol cases in carbide dies. It is not necessary, but it makes sizing much smoother.
The freezer trick may work but yank it fast it will start to warm super fast, i use this trick at my machine shop.may be easer to send off…lol
I appreciate all the help, sucks being a Noob!
I use a small propane torch to burn out any lube still surrounding the case. I think this also expands the die and squeezes the case some more. I then put it in the deep freezer and let is set at least over night. The colder the better. After it has cold soaked I have an old piece of radio antenna with a bend on the end. I insert the antenna and try to catch the end (mouth) of the case and hold the die in my hand. At some point while the die is warming up, you get a maximum distance between the still cold soaked case and the warming die. If you have the case mouth snagged it will pull out. Don’t ask me how I know this. :o kwg
SEND IT OUT? This is a common occurance, do what I said and then invest in one of the kits to remove stuck cases.
What you said won’t work because he said the case is ripped in half. There is no primer pocket to drill out and tap.
I had a once fired Federal case rip in half in my FAL, just as you are describing. I filed a sharp end on a brass rod and forced it between the chamber wall and the case. Once I had a section pried away from the chamber wall I knocked it out with a cleaning rod. You should be able to do about the same thing with a little patience and a 3/16" brazing rod.
Federal .308 brass is very soft. I stopped using it in my FAL because even mid-level loads were deforming the rim. If it matters, I had a 16" DSA with the short gas system; since sold when I realized I couldn’t afford to feed it on a regular basis.
