I am looking at getting a new folder to myself as a graduation gift (graduating with a bachelors in chemistry in 3 weeks), and I am unsure whether i want the PT or the SNG, I have heard that the PT is pretty small and while the SNG is a medium sized knife it can be a bit big for pocket carry.
I normally wear blue jeans or khaki’s and am in a environment with a lot of people.
so tell me which you prefer and if yo have pics that is awesome
Out of pure idle curiosity, have you nailed down a job yet?
Not being snooty, just wondering about the environment you mentioned. I work in a place were sometimes people have a faintoid if they see a knife clipped to my pocket.
So I stopped carrying a Buck/Strider, which is about the same size as an SMF.
Instead, I’m usually carrying a Spyderco Ronin, in a concealed kydex pocket sheath.
What kind of tasks are you going to be using the knife for? Will a multitool work?
Just asking, as the words multitool and engineer go together so well.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with buying yourself a well-deserved trophy, just because you want it.
And congrats on earning your degree! A degree in a “hard science” like chemistry is a real achievement.
I am hoping to secure a federal job, i have already applied to the FBI and will apply for a few more federal jobs once i have my degree…if i can’t get a federal job i will end up in a lab at BASF (large chemical company) quite a bit of my family has worked there.
I will probably use it for cutting things haha…i read up quite a bit about the striders and they seem to be rock solid.
+1 for SNG
I carry one every single day. I’m average size 5’10" 195lbs and wear medium size gloves. I do not find that it is too large or difficult to carry by any means. It fits my hand very well and just feels right. It rides in my front pocket no matter if it’s jeans, khakis or some kind of “uber-high-speed-tac-pants” :sarcastic: It gets used as a general duty knife everything from opening boxes, whittling away at my workbench while I’m supposed to be studying chemistry all the way to cutting steak at diner. The finish barely shows any wear and the edge maintains itself well but also it is always kept sharp. Lock up is rock solid as the Striders are known for and the liner lock snaps into place with a very distinct snap that has become one of my favorite sounds (seems kind of weird until you’ve flipped one open a couple times). I’ve only been using this knife for about 3 months now but I forsee carrying this knife for a very long time. I guess the bottom line is… Even though I have only had my SNG for a relatively short time, if I lost this knife I would buy another instantly without hesitation.
Congrats on graduating. I am in my second year at Penn State for a chemical engineering bachelors. Starting organic next semester…
thanks for the input the pictures are nice too. I am gonna try and handle both knives, apparently my cousin has both but he is ridiculously hard to get ahold of lol.
As for organic chemistry…its really not that hard if you can visualize things. The hardest class i ever took during my 4 years was Physical Chemistry
Yeah, I think after my chem110 & 112 that I will be fine with organic. Physical chem sounds like a nightmare, I’m sure I’ll get there eventually. Have to check the degree schedule and see when I run into that daisy of a class
As far as the Striders, I don’t think you can go wrong with either of the two blades. I’m sure the PT locks up tight as well. Let us know what you go with when the time comes
SnG CC is really a great knife. You get the size and utility of an SnG, but it is extremely “carryable.” Nothing to wear your pants like rough G-10 can, and can be slipped into the pocket in a non permissive enviroment.
Another vote for the SNG. I was looking at the same two knives, and after handling a PT, I felt it was just a bit too small for my purposes.
While I was worried the SNG wouldn’t carry well, I have found it to be fairly comfortable and not too large. I usually carry it in my front jeans pocket off duty, and haven’t had any problems.
What folder do you carry right now? The SnG is the perfect EDC for most depending on your daily attire. If your dress is relatively casual you will be fine with the SnG. The PT is pretty small but more people friendly in certain work environments. I’m never without my SnG. In fact I have two.
I personally think that you cannot go wrong with Striders in general. I recently purchased the PT model. It is fairly small. However, the little things locks up like a beast. (as it should for 300 dollar knife). I usually carry big knives being out in the bush alot. But the little strider has handled everything I can throw at it. Also I have Medium-large sized hands and I find the PT very easy to work with, and conceals easy as well. Just my .2 You can’t go wrong with either, but it you need to conceal I would suggest the PT. And congrats on the degree Hope all goes well.
Only 2.5 inch blades on federal property, even if you are a federal employee. Federal LEO excluded of course. So you may want to go with something else other than the two knives you listed if you expect federal employment and believe you will be in and out of federal buildings all day. Sure with a badge many facilities probably let you right in without a secondary check, but the law is 2.5" so be aware of that.
About the only time I don’t have my SNG on me is when I’m in a suit, and that’s only because if I’m a a suit I am going to court and can’t have a knife on me at that time.
thanks for the info on that, I remember a friend telling me the same thing, and I was at that point I would probably have to pick up a cheap smaller spyderco or something as the sort.
I think i have decided on a knife though, I am looking at the SNG black digicam
I broke down and ordered the SNG…i did notice these knives can be hard to come by…i had to check out a few dealers before I found one in stock I wanted.
I ended up getting a tan gen6 SNG with the tiger stripped blade, should be here sometime this week or next which is great as my last exam is wednesday
Hey so… whats the deal with Striders? I’ve been removed from the bladed community for several years and have never heard of them till recently. I’ve always been an Emerson man.
from what I have researched/read they are over built and over engineered and are rock solid…honestly 400$ is a lot of money for a knife when i can get a spyderco for about 120$ but this was something i wanted and would mean more to me versus a spyderco, also i have heard of people using these knives from standard cutting tasks to be using as a crow bar.
The other thing I read a few times was that these folders are nearly as strong as a fixed blade knife due to their locking system.
