Strange Malfunction

Hello,

I went out and shot my AR today and was having a problem maybe some one could help me with.

I am shooting a custom built DTI from The AR Bunker. 16" Barrel. I habe only put about 100 rds through it breaking the barrel in about a month ago.

I had been shooting xm193 from Fedreal and Winchester. Toda I tried some new ammo 62 Gr Tactical made in Turkey to NATO specs.

What happened was about 12 rds into the new ammo the weaponed fired and tried to feed a new round into the back of the old one. It compressed the bullet into the case of the new round. I tried a double feed clearing and the spent round would not come out.

I ended up breaking the rifle in half and using a rod to get the old case out. I saw no bulges or deformities in the case and the chamber and bolt all look good.

I reloded and about 8 rds into it the same thing happed. I looked on the rim of the shot ammo and it had teeth marks from the extractor.

I am running a standard buffer could this be the problem?

FTEs can be caused by a couple of things, but the buffer isnt going to be one of them.

if the cases dont have torn rims, i’d suspect your extractor. the ammo is questionable, and most likely contributing, but your extractor should be tuff enough to at least tear the rim off if the case is superglued in there.

my advice is, try this: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-SOPMOD-Bolt-Upgrade-Rebuild-Kit-p/bcm%20bolt%20upgrade%20kit.htm and stick with quality ammo

Contact “the AR Bunker” and ask them if the chamber is a true 5.56. What type of extractor spring and insert does your carbine have? The most common problem here is either the extractor or a chamber that is tight. I also wouldn’t rule out the ammo.

I highlighted your problems. This is what happens with cheap parts and cheap ammo.
The barrel probably does not have a NATO spec chamber and your Turkish ammo is probably not true NATO spec.

I just realized that DTI is Del-ton. That pretty much sums it up. My guess is that if he reamed the chamber and had the proper extractor spring and insert he would be GTG.

Thanks for the help. Here is some more info.

Ammo is called American Tactical made in “Turkiye” it was the best deal on the shelf

I know Del-Ton is not top tier but you have to go with what you can afford.

The barrel says 5.56 as wel as the lower. The upper has a keyhole stamp.

The barrel has m4 feed ramps but the upper does not I was told that this works better.

Chrome moly barrel

Do I really need the whole bolt rebuild kit since it is brand new or just the extractor upgrade? I will buy whichever is best.

Thanks for the help!!

Sounds like they assembled your gun out of left over parts and then sold you a scrap yard.

At this point I would return the entire rifle. Get your money back ASAP and buy something else.

if it’s new… why does it need a bolt upgrade??

Here are some things to think about.

Is Del-ton really that bad? I read a lot of good things about them in a magazine and from AR15.com?

When I tried to register the warranty with Del-ton I found out that the serial number would not work with their registration because it was sold as a stripped lower. When I called AR Bunker about it that is when I found out that it was a custom build.

I paid $1000.00 for it. I bought 2 from him.

Also I said I needed to use a rod to clear the emty shell but it took no pressure at all. My fingers will not fit into the chamber so the shell was not stuck as much as I think that the extractor just was not grabbing it hard enough. I am new to the AR world and I need help in making sure this thing will run with no problems. I was told that it had a lifetime warranty from AR Bunker but I am not sure that I want them to work on it.

thanks

Custom my ass. I willing to bet the AR Bunker built your rifle out of the cheapest shit they could find.
Trust me, if they were a great product, people around here would know about it.

Again, I would return it as fast as possible and put money down on something else.

I don’t pretend to know much, but here are a couple guesses…

  1. Switch back to known-quality ammo and see if the problem persists. If your gun shoots M193 without problems and consistently jams using the Turkish stuff, then you have an ammo problem, not a gun problem.

  2. The case comes out easily, then I think you’ve got a “timing” problem. The gun is trying to extract the casing while it’s still under pressure in the chamber, which is difficult. A heavier buffer might help here by slowing down the action, AFAIK. A stiffer extractor spring or o-ring might help, too.

Bimmer

You ought to be able to build a Del-Ton yourself for $600-$800 depending on options including the cost of your own stripped lower… So you paid too much for something that is built from sub-standard parts… If you paid a grand each you can either build or buy something that actually is quality for around that or just a wee bit more…

I have right at a grand into this guy:

http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=30699

and that’s with added Magpul goodness instead of standard parts…

Oh yea… all the ingredients are here…

Cheap “custom” barrel with little chance of being 5.56mm chamber…check
using crappy Turkish Ammo most likely not to NATO spec… check
Listening to gun rags and chuckle heads on Arfcom who have no clue what they don’t know, and don’t know it… check.

Do yourslelf a favor… go sell those guns on ARFCOM and buy a good gun like a Colt or BCM or LMT and chalk it up as a lesson learned…

It’s only a good deal if they work… you will spend more money in an attempt to make them work and in the end, you will pay more then if you had bought a better brand in the first place…

OK, guys, the OP already knows that he’s got a problem, so there’s no point rubbing his face in it…

Because most cheap bolts don’t have the recommended extractor springs or o-rings to help with reliability in carbines. They are also not likely to be MP/HP tested for structural integrity.

At the very least, I’d upgrade the extractor spring/o-ring. Actually, I’d just sell the bolt (or better yet, the entire rifle) on the EE and buy a better one.

Indeed.

Let’s mentor, not chastise.

I was at my in-laws farm shooting when all this happened. On the way home today it hit me that I was probably the cause. In the search for a quick easy clean job I used non-chlorinated brake cleaner from my shop to clean the bolt last time. When I got home tonight I took the gun apart and as I thought the o-ring was just mushy black gummy material.

My other problem is that I really need to look into another rifle acording to all of the negative input.

I just want a basic M4 w/ 16" barrel. Will be using it for clases and EOTW moments. I can accesorise later.

Assuming I can sell the ones I have for 1k each.

Thanks.

Glad to hear you got part of the problem realized. I would sell the Delton’s for what you can get with out taking a huge hit. TOS EE will probably be the best bet.

Take the money from those and invest in quality parts or a quality rifle. Like was suggested earlier I would got with Colt, Noveske, LMT, BCM.

Is there a particular reason you bought two? If not and you can get close to what you have in them, then you are very very close to a 6920 with sling, light, possibly an optic and some good ammo. I would rather have a quality rifle that works than two that work sometimes.

The Turkish ammo could still be shot, just make sure its only on the square range. Sounds like it would be good for malfunction drills.

Either way it is always “live and learn” when it comes to AR’s. Sorry you got bad info before your purchase. I look at TOS as a gamers/ social shooters network not far removed from airsoft world, just with real bullets.

Stick around here and you’ll get some very good info for future purchases. Good luck and let us know which way you end up going.

Thanks for the advice. I definetly will be hanging around here more. As Katar said I need mentoring in this area. I can’t combine the sale of both. I did look at Bravo Company and they were out of stock on BCM and LMT upper halves. Where do I get lower halves from BCM or LMT. I cannot find the other brands at all. I hate to sound like a complete newbie but what is TOS EE. I am a former FFL holder but never really messed with AR and have no real contacts that are honest. I have a friend who is a FFL holder and can shipped whole ARs or Lowers to hime please point me in the right direction. I already have optics etc.
Thanks
