Admitted newb here- just got an S&WMP15 and scope. I know I should get a better case than the plastic one that came with it, but need to save up a few $ first (ammo and cleaning supplies were expensive too). ALso have to save up to by a safe.
So… I know that in handguns, storing them inside the plastic foam lined case is a no-no. Is this the same for the AR? Or can the AR, assuming it is cleaned, be stored inside its case? Reason why I ask is the larger amount of Aluminum used in the AR versus steel in handguns.
I would put a dessicant pack in the box.
Thanks! have not had a chance to shoot it yet (crappy weather/muddy range) so it has been in the case now for a couple of weeks.
I would say it depends on where you live. Next to the ocean or in a humid state no way.
If you live in a dry climate you’ll be alright but you should still air it out periodically, and keep the steel parts wiped down with a good rust preventing oil like CLP or some of the specialty storage products out there.
There is plenty of steel in an AR, and it was quite a problem for us in Germany in our arms room due to the humidity. Unattended guns would be rusty in days. Ive also seen guns rust in Iraq during the late summer months but that had more to do with people not doing maintenance than anything.
i use a Voodoo Tactical case for mine when im going out it can hold 2 m4s 2 side arms and pretty much any thing you may want. it’s fine. oil it up and maybe throw some desiccant. if it’s long term just check on it every so often. all this until you get a decent case of course.
