Stolen ACOG????

Went to a Pawnshop today wasting time and found a TA01NSN Acog, I was shocked that the price was $150 so I had to look at it. Barely used but upon further inspection I found it was etched. Initials and last 4 ssn# from what it looked like to me.
Now i’m a Navy guy and thats how we do our stuff from tools all the way to knives and socks but i’ve never seen our guys do this to scopes.
I don’t know if the other services do this but what should I do?
Buy it and use it myself?

Well, that is interesting. At that price, it is most likely hot in some way (either stolen from the Military or from a person).

I’d snatch it up for $150 if it was me.A LaRue mount for an ACOG cost $125.
FWIW,when I was in the Army,we marked our stuff with our last initial and last 4 SS numbers.

ETA-Just because it’s a low price doesn’t mean it’s stolen.They probably don’t know what they have exactly.

It may be hot but probably not. The pawn shop doesn’t know what it is- that’s for sure. They could have ripped someone off.

I think most ACOG’s have a 4 digit serial number on the housing.

Was the same number present twice on the housing? Right next to one another?

It is actually etched with ST9439 meaning somebody took the time to do it.
I etch the mags of my Glocks and HK’s with my initials and last 4 ssn for theft and identity reasons.

Hay that is my ACOG. I will PM you with my address so you can send it to me.

i will give you $200 for it and pay for shipping.

I’m only 45 minutes away, where is it?

Personally, I would have bought it and asked no further questions. Liability on Your part would be minimal considering that a pawn shop sold it to You. Why can’t I ever get that lucky!

If you are concerned that the ACOG is stolen, contact your local police to see if one was reported stolen.

The guy who oenwed it may have needed the $$.

I would have bought it and keep the receipt to show just in case you needed to cover your butt. Are they ACOG replicas around?

Let’s talk a moment about what happens when you buy stolen Military hardware.

Scenario:

You find a good deal on an ACOG (or IR laser, NV, etc). You buy it and take it home. One month to one year passes. You get a knock on the door. Two federal agents wish to speak to you about an ACOG that you purchased.

They ask you if you currently have this item in your possession. You say yes. They ask to see it. They veryify that the serial number matches and advise you that you own a piece of stolen hardware. They take said ACOG with them and you are 100% SOL and are lucky to not be charged with receiving stolen property.

I know of at least two people that this has happened two (and one was charged with buying stolen items).

Heston has a good point…

Just make sure you keep the reciept from the shop…

pass on it

If uncle sugar owns the ACOG, they will not pay you for it. They just take it (and maybe throw you in jail).

An ACOG at such a price could be a chicom knock-off. You could get the ser# and call the company.

If genuine, pay cash. Keep a receipt. In the unlikely event someone inquires, present the receipt.

Last time I read the pertinent code(s), intent was an element of applicable offenses. You’re highly unlikely to be inconvenienced with more than seizure of the property.

Some states/locales have funds for compensation of folks who suffer loss such as this. Where that’s not available, courts may include your losses in restitution orders.

I didnt think they made a chinese knockoff that could pass as the real thing?

Thats exactly what happened to me some time ago when I bought a set of NVGs on ebay.

6 months later the FBI showed up and asked for them back.

I of course did so.
