Stock Suggestions Needed

Well, for the past few months I’ve been running a MagPul UBR on my BCM BFH lightweight 16" middy, but (understandably) it hasn’t been balancing the rifle very well. In hindsight, putting the heaviest collapsible stock ever made on a light upper wasn’t the best decision as not only were the weight savings pretty much made moot, but it threw off the balance. The UBR is a good stock, but as others have said (and I tend to agree) it’s best suited for heavier precision rigs, and not lightweight fighting carbines.

I’ve found a local buyer whom I’ve known a few years that is buying it from me for only $20 less than I paid for it (his offer), but doesn’t need the USGI spring or H buffer, so this opens me up completely for whatever option I could want… but I’m not sure which direction I want to go.

Specifics of the rifle already given, a little info about me. I’m a taller person, with a LOP definitely on the higher end of the scale - I can and have run an A2 stock in the modern “isosceles” stance comfortably, and whenever I do use a collapsible system, I tend to run it all the way out. Often I only collapse it for storage.

But, I still need a stock. I’ve run the lower from my A4 build on this upper, and it feels comfortable, but I still would like a collapsing system. Aside from the UBR, all I’ve used were M4-style stocks with commercial tubes from my “cheaper is just as better” Del-Ton days, which suited my needs fine, but my experience is woefully limited in this area.

What I’ve been thinking I might use is a Vltor A5 tube and buffer, coupled with a MOE milspec to maintain the light weight and overall slim profile the rifle already has, but there are so many other options out there that might work that I haven’t a clue. Would an A1 setup suit me? Should I go with an ACS or SOPMOD on the A5? Should I stick with a milspec RE and go with… something?

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

P.S.: I’m working with limited funds, so buying a lot of equipment and swapping out configurations isn’t an option. The spring and buffer I’ll have left over could be used, but if not, I have another rifle in progress that they’d be a perfect match for.

I use an ACS stock, it’s noticeably heavier than the CTR but not anywhere near UBR heavy. I find that it balances my rifle well with a 14.5" pencil barrel and 12" DD LITE rail system. Cheek weld is excellent and of course it’s got the magpul friction lock thingy to stop any jiggling. It also has a tactical candy compartment with a little door and two tubular tactical pepperoni stick compartments. :sarcastic:

If for whatever reason you decide you need it heavier you can fill the battery tubes with batteries or pieces of rebar or something. They hold 3 CR123 batteries each for a total of 6. I prefer to run the battery tubes empty or with only two extra CR123s.

My one complaint with it is the QD sling swivel mount (not included). First because it’s not included, you have to buy it separate which is LAME. Second because it is not an anti-rotation mount. Due to the overhang of the battery compartments it does not swivel freely at least, but I wish it was stuck in a more solid position.

You could run an Emod A5 system.

If price is a concern
You could pick up the older Vltor modstock for $50 and look for a endplate, castle nut and receiver ext on EE.

I added a $20.00 Sprinco Blue spring to my 16" carbine with standard receiver extension, H buffer and it smoothed it out, ALOT.

my MOEs balance out well with my 12.0 rail LW uppers

I’m currently using the Vltor IMod on both of my 16" carbines, one midlength, and one carbine gas system. They’re govt. profile barrels, w/ free float rails on both guns (9" LaRue on midlength and 12" Omega X FSP on carbine). I like the IMod for the fact that it provides a solid cheekweld, is easily adjustable, and it is relatively light weight (approx. 9.4 oz. as per Vltor’s website), compared to 14 oz. for the Magpul ACS, and 11.5 oz. for the LMT SOPMOD. Additionally, it comes with a QD cup, although it isn’t rotation limited. I was using an ACS before this, and while it was an excellent stock, it was bit heavy for my tastes. I find the IMod to be just right.

I’m also using the Vltor A5 receiver extension system. I’ve run approximately 2500 rounds through my 16" midlength (a BCM BFH) since the A5 has been installed, and there is a noticeable difference in perceived recoil. The gun definitely feels “softer”. I haven’t had any reliability issues in terms of failure to feed, bolt locking back on last round, etc. I’ve used ammo ranging from IMI M-193 and PMC M-855, to commercial 223 stuff, to my own handloads, and all of them worked flawlessly. While the A5 certainly isn’t necessary for a smooth running carbine, it is a welcomed addition, and I intend to use it for future carbines.

I run MOE on my rifles with the .07 rubber pad. I am very happy with them. The price is right $54

standard m4, moe, or mod stock at the lower end of the price spectrum. Moving up, CTR, EMOD, SOPMOD. All depends on if you want storage or not, if you need a sling attachment, and if you like the wider cheek weld.

I’d be looking at the MOE or IMOD.

Short, light, and the most affordable stock in their form factors - they’re also excellent stocks.

Storage isn’t important, nor sling attachment points (I intend to use an endplate). The cheek weld of a stock with… well, “cheeks” is nice, though. A friction lock like the CTR/ACS both offer is a luxury, but a little wobble never bugged me much.

So far, my lean toward the A5/MOE combo appears sound.

Minor drift: Llama, your sig line doesn’t look like Farsi or Thai-Hindi to me - Nepalese?

If it’s between the IMOD and the MOE, I prefer the IMOD personally. I like the cheeks.

If you want to try a MOE out for cheap I have an ugly one that I’d do you right on.

PM me if you’re interested.

moe and ctr are good to go for what your looking for

As has been stated the current standard is the CTR, followed by the MOE if you don’t need QD’s. The original Vltor is a little lighter but provides a more positive cheekrest.
