Stock preference for 16" Mid-length: B5 SOPMOD or Magpul CTR?

may be true, but does it do anything the $80 Imod doesn’t? not trying to start a flame war, and the OP mentioned the SOPMOD as one of his top 2 choices so if that price point is good for him that would probably be his preference. i’m just wondering what i’m missing.

This +1

Just as an FYI, we sell the B5 SOPMOD for $80 (with the purchase of a lower or complete AR).

FWIW, I’m a fan of both the SOPMOD (incl B5) and the IMOD. They are similar and both have advantages and disadvantages. Both offer nice cheek welds as well. Notable differences include:

[ul]
[li]SOPMOD is longer and a better choice if one wants to use the VLTOR A5 RE. Neither the SOPMOD or the Imod will engage the first position on that extension. Have to use the an A5SR RE.
[/li]
[li]SOPMOD tolerances are tighter on the RE and doesn’t rattle like all of the IMODs I’ve used. Not a huge deal for me, but annoying for some.
[/li]
[li]SOPMOD is heavier than the IMOD- 12.0 oz. versus 9.9 oz (clubfoot version).
[/li]
[li] One has to remove the SOPMOD from the RE to access the storage compartments. However, the caps on storage compartments are more secure with this configuration. This could be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the user’s needs.
[/li]
[li]The gaps between the IMOD’s cheek pods and stock may tug at one’s facial hair. YMMV.
[/li][/ul]

Yeah, it doesn’t snag my facial hair. Now, I don’t have a full beard or anything, but I’ll go a couple days between shaving when I can get away with it. My older Vltor and iMod always pulled. My CTR would occasionally as well, but that was where it met the receiver extension.

I currently run all SOPMODs though I may through an iMod or one of those small Colt stocks (if I can find one) on my 10.5" and the 8".

Here’s my CTR and a B5 SOPMOD before I replaced the CTR.

Just to throw another in the mix you might want to look at the Tactical Intent" TI 7. It looks like a bastard cross between a CRT and a SOPMOD. I wanted a wider stock with some storage and tried a few… then I found the TI-7 and am very happy.

It locks on tight (has a pressure arm) has plenty of storage, doesn’t require a smooth shave like an IMOD, has the shielded release of the CRT and at a decent price.

Given the choice between the two I’d go with the sopmod. I personally prefer the negative pitch on the Imod as well as the storage ease. FWIW

How well does the SOPMOD work with the A5 buffer and RE? I’ve read that you can only collapse the stock to the second position with that combination.

Magpul UBR

I have the SOPMOD that came with my LMT and liked it so I added one to my Colt. When both stocks are collapsed they are very close to the castle nut (1/16" Colt and 2/16" LMT). When Fully extended they are exactly the same length. The only major difference is there are two more positions to adjust to on the 6 position RE of the LMT. It hasn’t been an issue for me but you could easily change to a 6 position RE from LMT for $44 at G&R Tactical.

That’s correct, my mistake. It actually collapses to approx 1.5, but obviously won’t lock in the first position.

Thus, use the 6 position A5SR if you want to use the A5 system or run a carbine RE.

Nice looking boomsticks JC.

If you want a cheek weld I would stir away from the ctr and toward the str or acs

Thanks bro. I appreciate what you guys do and the B5 SOPMOD is every bit as good as my LMT’s. Just wish mine had the limited rotation QD (and one was maybe Multicam or ATACS).

SOPMOD, I have 2, one on a 16 INCH BCM Middy, the other on my DD 14.5 Middy. Rock solid, balances perfectly.

Soon…

I really like the SOPMOD but I think my favorite is the IMOD just for Compact size.

I haven’t found the iMod for significantly cheaper than the B5 SOPMOD. I thought they both went for about $99?

Either way – different strokes for different folks. The SOPMOD and the iMod are arguably the two best stocks on the AR market.

(Keep in mind you can remove the battery tubes from the SOPMOD and it’ll weigh about the same as the iMod)

The vast majority of stocks are under $125 (Magpul UBR and LMT-branded SOPMOD being the major exceptions) and within the narrow range that most of them inhabit I think someone would be foolish to choose based on price.

I’ve used most of the stocks listed and my two favorites are the SOPMOD (B5 is equally good as the LMT, I own one of each) and the Emod. I’ve briefly owned and used the Magpul STR and ACS-L and while each was OK, I didn’t like their ergonomics or construction as well as the SOPMOD and Emod. I think they feel flimsier with their design, and yes I’m aware of the Gearscout test suggesting they are among the strongest in an arbitrary drop test. I strongly dislike Magpul’s QD sling cup used on the STR and ACS (and UBR) which is one-sided and sticks far out, compared to the flush, integrated, double-sided cups used on other quality stocks that have a QD swivel attachment (VLTOR, SOPMOD, TI-7, EFX-A1).

My personal suggestion would be:
small/light/compact setup: Magpul MOE or CTR
typical 16" carbine: SOPMOD
heavier carbine/rifle: Emod

Within the quality brands it is basically just a matter of personal preference.

Didn’t want to start another thread on Magpul CTR and QD attachment.

I’m beginning to warm up to QD attachment vs my Magpul MS3 attached via Magpul ASAP and MSA on my MOE handguard.

So recently acquired a GGG 2point sling and now searching what’s best go to QD for this set Magpul CTR
and replace the Magpul MSA with ITC QD mounts

I added a few QD in SKD wishlist like VLTOR and Midwest.
