I’m spending some time working on stippling my PPQ today, but I’m not sure I’m getting it grippy enough. As I’m only working on the backstraps for now, I thought I’d get some input.
First pic is the PPQ with the large backstrap, stippled, with the finest point in the woodburning kit I found at Lowe’s. It feels somewhat grippier than a non-stippled backstrap, but I’m not sure it’s ‘enough’ for me to start on the rest of the frame.
OTOH, I’m wondering if I just can’t feel it as well on the backstrap as I’ll be able to at the finger grooves/sides area.
The second pic is with the slightly less fine bullet point in the kit, it feels even less grippy.
I recently stippled my G23 and as I was doing it I thought the same thing. After I was done I went and shot it and it was enough actually I needed to sand it in a few areas to “soften” it a little. I used some sandpaper and scotchbrite for the “softening”.
You also need to remember that the backstraps on the PPQ are very soft, The frame is much harder in compairsion, I’d go with the fine point on the frame, I’m sure it’ll be grippy enough. You could also try the fine point on something like a P-mag first, stipple a area on a mag and see if it’s what you want…
Also, the initial sharpness of the stippling will wear down just a hair from usage after a little while. Nothing drastic but it may be something to note. But, you can always make it more or less aggressive if you decide it doesn’t work for you after a little range time including some drills.
Thanks, folks. I decided to start on a LE trade-in Glock that was less than pretty to start with - fine point on the harder frame polymer definitely makes it grippy enough. I wasn’t accounting for the difference between the PPQ backstraps and the frame itself.
I’m quickly learning that I need to wear a pair of Mechanix gloves (my woodburner gets too hot to hold pretty quickly) and take frequent breaks to keep from getting sloppy.
