Im looking for a steel target for my range. Would this (standard auto popper) using AK74 surplus steel ammo and Russian .223? Also would 50 yards be too close?
everyone’s got their own comfort level, and ranges vary a lot on policy… personally, i’m comfortable zapping pretty much any steel at 50. i think any kind of large 180 ricochets at that distance will probably hurt, but aren’t going to kill you. wear eye pro.

50 is a little close for steel core and or steel jacketed ammo I would say 100 as a minimum with the ammo you listed. If you are shooting regular lead core fmj ammo 50 is perfectly fine.
