Steel Targets Ideas

Hello folks,

I’m looking for some ideas on how to build CHEAP steel targets. Nothing fancy, obviously not automatic like the Larue ones (wish I could afford at least one!). The idea is to build about 6 and donate them to the local range so I can benefit from the fun :slight_smile:

If any of you guys have pics or ideas they will be greatly appreciated. The most common rounds around here are 5.56/.223, 7.62 x 39, 7.62 x 51 and handgun calibers.

I have access to a lot of tools including an electrical welder and a mitter saw with 10" steel cutting disc.

Other thing, it would be great if anyone have ideas on where to look for free scap steel :smiley:

Thanks in advance for your help.

“Cheap” and “scrap” steel used for targets, especially rifle targets, is what generally leads to all the problems associated with steel: target pocking, target shape changes and inconsistent (and therefore dangerous) fragment splash patterns.

If you want to use steel, pony up and buy good stuff.

I used to have some pretty good resource articles on steel targets, their construction and use. If I can find them somewhere, I’ll get them to you…

I like these rifle rated self re-setting poppers from metal spinning targets

I’ve heard really good things about Mike Gibson Manufacturing. (MGM)

Rifle capable steel targets are going to need Armor Plate so rule-out the “Cheap” aspect right away.
You can’t cut/weld Armor plate with conventional means like a cutting torch without it losing the hardness in the heat-effected zones.

Cheap = dangerous

Also, recommend you visit these threads to learn more about steel targets. It takes more than a welder and some steel to design and manufacture steel targets that are safe and durable .
