Stag 16" carbine - what do I need to upgrade?

I have a Stag 16" carbine. I have about 1500 rounds through it. It works 100% reliably with good ammo. The only ammo it has problems with is Wolf.

I have been reading on this board about the differences between Stag, Colt and LMT.

It sounds like I need to have the carrier key properly staked. Does anyone do this as a service? It also sounds like I need a black insert in my extractor spring (it has blue now).

Is there anything else?

We’re in the same boat, I’ve had my Stag for about three months now and have been reading about some of the recommended improvements.

Here’s a helpful thread.

You guys may want to contact gotm4. He’s a member and moderator here. I don’t know if he’ll do the work for you but, he knows a lot, has a lot of experience, and does great work.

He’s one of the few guys who I will gladly let work on my guns.

If you guys want to send me your bolt and carrier, include a return shipping label. I will stake your BCG key properly and upgrade the internals for 7bucks.

Offering services on this site without being a dealer is going to get you nasty PM’s from Grant errrr “Staff” and your post edited.
Ask me how I know.

oops, I figured since I was doing it for free that I wasnt being a bad boy lol. I bought a bunch of upgrade sets from Grant and after shipping I figured thats what they cost me. So I wasnt trying to make any $$. The real reason I offered is I got this new PMOAKS and its just laying around as I restaked my all my buddies BCG and want to get some use out of it. Besides I figure its returning the favor as I had free offesr for a badly staked CMT carrier of my own in the past.

Ah, but you don’t realize that by doing something for free, you are removing the ability for someone else to charge for it.
When that someone else runs a forum, he can edit your posts and then come and offer the same service for his own price.
That’s the great thing about being the big fish in the pond.

True, true, true

We (dealers like you and I) are ALL little fish in this pond.

Yes but someday I may figure out how to make money doing this.

Ah how wrong you are. I could care less what you want to do for FREE.

What you want to do is gain business from a site for FREE. This is poor taste.

You are taking away business from the dealers on this forum that DO pay to be here. If that isn’t bad enough, you then get on here and say stupid things about me.

You did say one thing that was correct though. You are a small fish in a big pond and should remember that you are a guest here.

I called Stag. They said their way of staking the carrier was better. I really could not follow his reasoning why. It didn’t make sense.

Then, I asked about why they use a blue extractor insert. He said the blue and black were the same. He said he didn’t know why there were two colors for those things.

I was skeptical to say the least.

I spoke to GR Tactical this morning and ordered the extractor reliability package for each of my uppers.

I spoke to Paul at Bravo Company. He offered to properly stake my carriers for FREE!

Q: I have four uppers. Do I need to make sure that each of the carriers go back in the rifle they came from? I know I just can’t swap out the bolt due to headspace issues.

The TDP gives the correct methods for staking. The way Stag does it is incorrect.

Some manufacturers have had the blue extractor insert made black and it is in fact the same density. This is of course wrong.
LMT and Colt extractor inserts are much stiffer than the blue insert and anyone that has used them, would know this instantly. So it is safe to say that no one at Stag has handled a correct extractor insert.

Randall - comments like are not acceptable – I’m giving you a 2 week time out for them.

What Shihan offered is fine - he may not be a sponsoring dealer, but he is offering the service for free for a member of this site.
He is not sneaking around making snarky comments about the site.

Thanks for the kind offer! I’ve got my eye on a few other items so I’m planning on sending it to Grant for “one stop shopping.”

Thanks again for the offer.

I had to look up Snarky, never heard that one B4.

I went ahead and purchased a BCM BCG at Virginia Arms for one of my two RRA rifles, and I’ll keep the RRA BCG as a spare. It’s not properly staked (the RRA) so I’ll need to get it done. Until then two of my three AR’s use BCM BCG’s. When I get some more dollars I’ll probably get another BCM.

Ah, snarky is a Canadian thing. I know, I work with a bunch of Canadians.

In Minnesota, it’s called “getting snippy”. As in, today I had to redo all my timecards since July 1, because accounting screwed up, and when the automated system required that I put in a comment about why I was redoing my time cards, I “got snippy” in my response.

I am awaiting the inevitable phone call about my “attitude” sometime later today…

Thanks to everyone for the help on this. I just finished staking my castle nut. I wish I would have known some of these things before I bought my rifle. I think these changes will make my Stag carbine a better rifle.

Extractor reliability upgrade kits on the way
Carriers sent out for proper staking
I already had an H2 buffer
I just staked my castle nut.

I use good ammo (American Eagle) and military contract mags with Magpul 2nd gen followers. I lube the rifle with CLP liberally.

Can you guys think of anything else that is missing?
