That stinks. The .45 Hydrashock isn’t known to over-expand, it’s more likely to expand reasonably, partially, or not at all.
I understand why you’re interested in 1800-2200 fps bullets; for the stretch cavities intense enough to rip tissue.
My daily carry pistols are for non-LE self-defense in a typical US crime-rate area. My mission is survival / escape / break contact. I normally carry a S&W M&P 2.0 .45 10+1.
I’ve been carrying Hornady 230 gr XTP +P but plan to move to the same 200 gr LFN coated bullets i train with.
Oh, .45 has about 27% more frontal area than 9mm. That’s just raw diameter of course.

So for my purposes a smaller caliber round than 9X19 could be viable. The .30 Super Carry is an interesting concept but hardly anything is offered in it.
My goal in the unlikely event I had to use a firearm again in anger is to make the assailant decide to stop whatever it is they’re doing. Now if that means I have the opportunity to get a good sight picture and put rounds in places that make the decision for him then he’s going to have a super bad day.
On the other hand I don’t care if he gets shot in whatever part of his body I can land a hit on and decides this is way less fun than he thought it would be and decides it’s time to fuck off as fast as he can and leave me alone. That’s mission accomplished for me too.
9X19 is in sweet spot of readily available, affordable, and chambered in lots of handguns that can be concealed well, run right, and can be shot well. The cartridge/platform combo can get the ugly job done of forcing a stop to activities if needed, whereas smaller or alternative cartridges often aren’t offered in reliable platforms and might lack the penetration ability to force a stop.

I have Vortex LPV on my Colt 6490, it’s been GTG for my needs and uses. I have a Holosun on my back up/training pistol, an HK VP9, and used that to get used to RDS on a pistol before adding to any CCW/SD pistols.
Ok, what I know about real gunfighting one could put in a .380 casing… But were I suddenly called to the fields and streets to defend my family and community I would probably leave the pistol at home or maybe stuff my SIG P230 in a pocket somewhere. I would want as many mags for the rifle that I could carry.
If ball pistol ammo generally sucks then why not a HIGH capacity pistol in 5.7 ? High velocity and somewhat better penetration?
