Can anyone tell me what the differences are between the SR25 lower and the LMT MWS lower…other that the named stamped on it? Is everything else the same buffer tube, spring, trigger, etc.
Has anyone done a side by side comparison or can they please?
I don’t think the good man Freefallz actually owns both.
I initially bought the MWS thinking it would be ‘near as good as’ the EMC. I was pretty happy with the MWS but thought it was heavy, and thought it could use some improvements. I was getting about 1.5MOA average groups with it. I did notice the recoil was pretty stout for being such a heavy gun fully loaded with a Short-Dot, a Surefire light, ect. Id shoot 200 rounds, and walk away with a slight headache. Between shots the muzzle jumped completely off target.
One day I range buddy came, and showed off his EMC. I put some rounds through it, and immediately noticed how much less recoil it had, less muzzle jump between shots, and it felt so much lighter. I sold the MWS a within a week, and got my own EMC. Ive not regretted the decision. I also tried a BC BABC on the MWS prior to selling it, and the EMC still recoils less with less muzzle jump.
No doubt the MWS is a great gun but the EMC is that much better I felt the additional cost would be worth it in the long run. Calculating range fees, ammo, time, gas, cost of the guns, optics, ect…theres less than a 10% price difference over 10k rounds.
Now depending on your shooting you plan to do there are other options like the OBR which, from what Ive seen, outshoots the EMC accuracy wise but not by much. Im able to get .8-1.0 MOA 10 shot groups with my EMC with Federal American Eagle M1A 168 OTM’s which is only ~15/box. I shoot 90% of the time from 250-750 yards and even some 1k from time to time. The EMC is capable of making those hits at least to 750 but up until this week I only had a 1-4X Short-Dot on it. The best Ive done is 10 consecutive hits at 750 on LaRue targets.
If you are looking for precision Id just get the OBR, and put the 2k savings into optics. Its VERY easy to argue the OBR at 3k is a much better value than a 5k EMC. The main thing that holds me back from the OBR is the raised top rail which makes stock choices limited without some type of cheek riser. I also appreciate the fact the EMC comes in a little bit over 8lbs whereas the MWS and OBR are a bit under 10lbs. Enough difference a bare EMC is light and handy for being a 308.
I had read reports of the mws having a stout recoil and was expecting quite a rodeo when I shot mine for the first time. However, mine is the softest shooting .308 I own even softer than my FAL. I also have a PTR 91 and M1a. It also shoots softer than the M 110’s I’ve shot in the army. Granted it’s a sample of one but it’s been complete reliable and mine will hold 1 MOA all day long with 168 federal gmm with a 16" CL barrel. I am not sure if I just got lucky with mine shooting so soft or if its because it has the new style bolt carrier. The new carriers have a massive vent drilled in them and I’m wondering if that is bleeding off excess gas? The lmt is a little heavy (god help me for saying that), compared to the EMC. But if lmt came out with a light weight barrel I bet they could drop a pound off of the mws. I absolutely love mine.
What does the ammo , range fees and anything other than the price of the gun have to do with the 10% difference.
The KA SR25 Sells between 4 thousand and 4500 bucks and the MWS sells for 2100-2600 bucks. I would hope to get something for twice the cash....
10 % ???? I don't think so
The 2.5K is still a bit much for me to get over, but I think he has a great point. Asymptotically, the price of an “expensive” gun over a cheap gun is almost inconsequential against the cost of ammo, classes, etc in most cases.
Thanks for the breakdown but calling a LMT MWS a " Cheap" gun is way out in left field. Compare a SR-15 to a Bushmaster .223 and use the same logic and I’m with ya. The bottom line is the LMT weighs much more for a reason and is a hell of a rifle for the money. If you want to run a carbine class with a .308 rifle then the SR25 is almost impossible to beat. For twice the price of the GUN the Knights should and from all I read is a cut above the others in it’s class… And it should be because as far as I know It costs more.
He is attempting to capture the total life cycle costs for each weapon. The total cost of ownership at the end of the weapons life (approx 10K rounds here). This would include the cost of all maintenance, ammunition, facility fees required for use of the weapon, etc…
Well, I meant ‘cheap’ in the sense of less expensive for what you get, it was not meant to imply anything about the quality (or lack thereof). The MWS is an outstanding rifle by all accounts. I strongly considered on myself, but decided it wasn’t quite what I wanted as I did want more of a rifle I could potentially use in carbine classes. etc rather than something for long range precision shooting, which at least at present just isn’t my thing.
I also strongly considered the EMC but given my intended application and some reports of EMCs not faring well in such classes, I ended up going with the Scar 17. The 2k price difference certainly was a factor as well. It’s going to take me a long ass time to get to 10K rounds for the Scar and 2-3k is enough money to matter in the short term for me.
Ive talked with a couple members about this, and the consensus is the SR25 pattern guns (OBR, MWS, EMC) are better left to the recce/spr role rather than a battle rifle you can blow rounds through as fast as you want to.
If you want to do that get a FAL or or some other ‘light’ 308 carbine where replacement parts are cheap and they are designed to be run like that. Enhanced Match Carbine (EMC) doesnt say ‘battle rifle you can run 1k rounds through in a day’.
In fact I just transferred my SB PMII 3-12X to my EMC, and have gone out with it a couple times now.
With a FAL you can regulate the gas system so you can run the cheapest dirtiest ammo you can get your mitts on. I get sick of people buying expensive guns tuned to run a specific range of ammo, and then whining when their gun doesn’t run on their 5/box russian shit ammo. Not directed at you but people need to understand what parameters and intended use their gun was designed to run under.
