Got a buddy wanting to trade me a KAC SR15. I think its a Mod 1. Its got the long URX 3 rail on it. He doesnt have a clue WHAT model it is specifically. I think its about 2 years old, probably fired very little. I havent put my hands on it and im waiting for better pictures of it. I dont know anything about KAC stuff except its pricey. I should be able to put hands on it on Friday to check it over.
Anybody know what these are worth? I cant find much on them and not many for sale. The ones I did find looked like somewhere in the 1800-2000 range. Am I in the ball park?
I paid 1910 new for mine which was a screaming deal. You don’t see them pop up used often. Probably worth close to what I paid for mine new. I would say you’re in the ball park.
I got pictures of it. Its an E3 Mod 1, flip up BUIS, umbrella corp grip(I dont think this is stock?). My buddy says he maybe put 100-150 rounds through it and the pictures represent that. I havent touched it yet, probably Friday, but im going to snag it.
My other buddy who knows KAC stuff says 15-16 will move it quick, 17-18 I might sit on it a while. Im not necessarily interested in keeping the gun(although it might grow on me), but my buddy wanted something I had worth about 1500 and didnt have cash, but had a few guns and asked if I was interested in any of them as a trade. This was the only one I was interested in. He knows I will probably flip it. I told him if I get more than 1500 I would give him what ever extra I got out of it.
You are going through a lot of trouble for a couple of hundred bucks. If it were NIB I would feel different. It seems to me that most people who buy them do so only because they are hard to get. I have never seen a used one for sale down here down here. Unfired ones all the time.
Im simply trying to figure out what this gun is worth so I dont screw my buddy over. If the gun is worth 2k and my trade item is worth 1500, im screwing him over by taking his gun KNOWING its worth $500 more than the trade. On the flip side if everybody says “oh those are only worth about a grand” then im the one getting screwed.
It seems like the gun is worth 1500-1600 or so from what I can figure out, I told my buddy this, he still wants to do the trade.
I dont know if I would sell the gun or not, but if I do decide to sell I know I can at least get my 1500 out of it. If I get a little more, ill make my buddy whole.
I really don’t feel like they’re hard to get. I see them a lot. They hold their value because they are unique and made by a company who manufactures for the GOV. Colts seem to hold their value as well.
There must be 3 or 4 on the EE right now, I just sold a SR15 lower the other day.
My buddy says “the trigger pin keeps walking out and last time I was out I had a lot of failures to fire”. I knew instantly what was up.

Quick fix, although when the hammer spring legs are under the trigger pin things just dont come out very easily.
I believe this gun was shot more than I was led to believe. My buddy said he loaned it to a friend of his for a few months and I am guessing his buddy shot the shit out of it and then completely took it apart to clean it and didnt know how to put it back together correctly(although installing hammer springs legs UNDER the trigger pin takes some kind of special talent). Doesnt matter much to me as I know its a high quality gun. Gas rings are basically shot. The carrier will stand up on the bolt on its own, but any little movement makes it drop. The bolt moves around in the carrier very easily. Oh well, $10 for new gas rings, not a big deal.
Besides that the gun is clean. Got a case and a padded VTAC sling with it. Dont care for the padded VTAC’s, but whatever. Also not a fan of the SOPMOD stock as it rattles like no tomorrow, but I think there is a fix for that if I am not mistaken.
EHH, im backing out of this deal. Digging deeper into this gun things dont make sense. The gas rings are bad(on a gun that supposedly had low round count). Upon further review the bolt is a standard bolt NOT the KAC bolt. My buddy who knows KAC guns said dont run it, you will **** up the barrel extension. The hammer spring legs being under the trigger pin instead of on top of it is messed up too. My buddy doesnt know enough about guns to have ****ed with this in my opinion.
I have money on the person my buddy lent this gun to ****ed with it, maybe on purpose, maybe because they were an idiot, I dont know. I dont trust this gun so back to my buddy it goes.
Maybe someone broke the bolt or realized that a new one costs 350.00 (and removed it?) in any case it’s too bad. Another good reason not to lend guns to people, even so called buddies.
The thing is the gun doesnt look like it has the round count that the bolt had on it. I have almost 20k through a DDM4 from 2008 and the gas rings are still tight. That was the first thing that threw me off about the gun.
Im giving it back to my buddy and he says he is going to talk to the person who borrowed it to see if he can find the bolt. I still dont think I would be interested in it because I dont know enough to inspect the barrel extension and bolt to know if its damaged or not, but at least if he can get the original bolt back, and its not totally screwed up, and maybe he can get some money out of the gun.
I have a circa 2010 SR-15, so maybe the trigger group has changed…but mine looks nothing like yours.
I wonder if they switched out the trigger group on you? Are there any markings on the trigger? Is it a nice feeling 2 stage?
its a KAC marked trigger. Its a really nice 2 stage.
Everything else about the gun appears to be legit, just the bolt issue. Like I said the overall gun appears to be fairly low round count(my buddy estimated at between 1000-1500 that he put through it), but the bolt, which obviously isnt right, has a high round count on it.
I appreciate everybodies thoughts on this. My buddy isnt mad at me for pointing these things out and he is cool about everything and is going to take the gun back. He is more pissed than I am about the situation.
One other thing, you may already be aware. You can’t just put a regular bolt into an SR-15 BCG. The cam pin and firing pin are also proprietary. They probably switched out the whole BCG?
That’s not true, the KAC carrier is nothing special, it’s a standard carrier and will accept a standard bolt, firing pin and cam pin. The E3 bolt is proprietary and because of changes to strengthen the bolt around the camp pin it requires a proprietary cam pin & firing pin.
OP, sounds like someone swapped the bolt & replaced it with a beat up bolt thinking nobody would ever know the difference.
I dont know the situation or who my buddy let borrow the gun or whatever. It could have been on purpose, it could have been on accident. You take several AR’s to the range, shoot them, bring them home and break em all down for cleaning. If you dont know a ton about AR15’s you might just pull em apart, clean em, and throw whatever back together. WE know its bad to mix bolts in different guns(ESPECIALLY in this circumstance), but other people might not know. My buddy didnt know the bolts were different, but this is/was his only AR so he wouldnt have even had access to any other bolts to swap out. Thats why I really lean away from my buddy doing this on purpose. He also didnt push this gun on me on the trade, I brought it up. So I dont blame my buddy at all and he is being cool about the whole situation. He is as frustrated as I am.
Anyway this thread has run its course. I appreciate everybodies comments. Gun is going back to my buddy for him to deal with.
Agreed, I certainly am not accusing your friend of any wrong doing and while it is possible someone mixed the bolt up, if the attempted to put an E3 bolt in a standard AR it wouldn’t fit, so I couldn’t imagine someone not catching that mistake…
