I just picked up a used Springfield XDM 40 for $450. I know nothing about these pistols and this was entirely an impulse purchase. The reviews seem to be pretty good, and I love the feel but I haven’t fired it yet. Anybody have any experience with these things? Are they as reliable as my Glock? It is REALLY hard to release the magazine when the magazine is fully loaded (16 rounds) so I am concerned about the quality. I know I won’t drop a full magazine in real life but it seems like a design flaw. Thanks for the input.
There are several threads about the XD here…I’d recommend spending some time reading through the handgun forum.
Good price on it for sure. For some reason they have their own flavor of hatred against them on gun boards. I believe most of this is unfounded and not based in reality. Again, my opinion.
The downsides of the gun are you indeed cant drop a fully topped off mag without putting pressure on the bottom of it. Download by one and no issue dropping it. I think Springfield (aka HS 2000) wanted to capture the “I hold more rounds than you” market. But they did it by inducing a significant flaw.
The roll pin can (again…CAN) break if the pistol is dry fired many times. (hadnt heard about this until yesterday, there is a good XDm discussion on the “other” professional forum in the secondary weapon section)
I dont own the .40 versions, but have XD 45 and XDm 9 (both 4.5 and 3.8). XDm is a great step ahead of the old XDs. Ergonomics are excellent, everything is right where it should be. Trigger and reset are excellent, and the mag issue is solved by loading 18 and not 19. Not an issue for me personally. AR mags get loaded at 28 for me, so I dont feel cheated other than the fact Springfield should have called it an 18 rounder and been done with it.
Not a good CCW gun unless it is heavy coat weather, the grip is a bit longer than other options. Again, one man’s opinion.
Which is wrong, XDs have been observed to be inferior.

How is this a flaw? We download Glock mags by one and we download AR rifle mags by two.

It may be an alright range gun, but I wouldn’t CCW one. And I practice with the gun I carry, so why have a gun you don’t need? Shrug.

To the OP; do a search…You’ll find alot to read up on, I used to own a XD45 (4" service) and sold it…Moved up to a M&P 45,(midsize)… I don’t miss the XD, I think you’ll find there isn’t alot of love for the XD here, and that’s not without reason…
I already stated the AR download already in my post, everybody knows this as a common practice. Same with pistol mags. Just a professional discussion by a professional soldier, didn’t mean to get you all emotional.
I bought a XD9 Service, dumped it for a G19, never looked back. Like some others have stated, there’s plenty to read about XD’s…that being said there’s not a lot of people I know that back them as seriously as a Glock or M&P.
I used to own an xD 9 and currently own the xDm 40. There are two things that I really like about xD’s: ergos and triggers. My 9mm was 100% reliable and I regret selling a gun that was known to be reliable. The 40, on the other hand, has issues with FTF’s. I will be selling it in the very near future.
I don’t quite see how I was emotional, but thank you for the concern. I am quite touched.
In the mean time, if you and the OP had taken the time to read the sticky thread at the top of the forum, you would have found this:
The much despised XDm, XD and XD compact

Now I’ll be off to care to my delicate psyche, if you don’t mind.
