Spring 2010 Quantico 3gun match

This was a great match a few of the guys from the shop shot with me Saturday as well as Team VA Arms shooter Tim R. The match was totally free of charge and had great prizes. The match was totally free of admission charges and if you wanted you could shoot their guns free using their ammo their guns (Beretta M9s, Benelli M4s, Colt M4s w/EOTechs and FN M16A4s with RCO ACOGs) Stage guns were a full auto AK, iron-sighted FAL, EMR (accurized M14) and a M40A3 sniper rifle (the EMR and M40A3 had S&B scope…really badass). It was 5 stages. Team VA Arms had a huge turnout. We had guys that shot Thurs, some on Friday and 3 of use on Saturday. I won 1st place Civilian, have seen the printed scores yet but I think I was 2nd or 3rd overall. Off the prize table I won a Leupold Mark AR 3-9x mildot scope and 5 PMAGs. I had to work at the store on Thursday and Friday so I couldn’t get pics of our guys shooting those days.

Stage 1 : Rifle only stage on Quanticos Range 4 all at 300yds (all rifle obviously). Little 25yd jog to your rifle (or their M16A4 w/ACOG) prone out and shoot 4 resetting LaRue steel 30 rounds max allow (at lease one hit on each), then leave your gun run 25yds to the iron sighted FAL (USMC supplied with 10 rounds) prone out and shoot 4 steel IPSC targets with at least one hit each, then leave it and run to the EMR (accurized M14 in a SAGE chassis with a S&B scope, USMC supplied w/10 rounds). Prone out and shoot at the same four LaRue targets as you did with your rifle, leave it and run 25yds or so to a M40A3 (USMC provided with 6 rounds) prone out and shoot those same LaRue steel with at least one hit each. That FAL was the hardest obviously the FAL, EMR and M40A3 were all loaded with M118LR which made it a little easier but that FALs front sight almost completely covered the steel IPSC targets it took me all 10 rounds to get the four hits on the targets.

Stage 2 was shotgun-rifle-pistol:
Start with shotgun shoot some steel and a couple of clays. Barrel the shotgun and grab rifle shoot 6 targets from left and right side side of a barricade while staying in the shooting box. Then run to these 3 small ports and shoot 4 targets. I shot 2 of them 4 times each because I saw them from all three ports oh well. Then you barrel your rifle and then shoot a plate rack, I went 1 for 1 on the plates.

Stage 3 pistol only:

12 steel targets, a swinger, a drop turner and several paper targets, I did pretty good on this stage but not record breaking times. Consistently consistent was the order of the day.

Stage 4 Rifle-pistol:

Start with your rifle at low ready and from 3 ports engage 11 Airsoft size rifle targets (1/3 IPSCs) at various distances up to about 25yds. Barrel your rifle draw your pistol and engage 11 fullsize IPSC targets at various distances some with no shoots around them and then a plate rack, I f’d up and missed one of the pistol targets.

Stage 5: the most fun stage there! (AK, pistol, shotgun, rifle).

Start with a full auto AK (loaded with 10 rounds) must stay on full auto. AK is on the table hands relaxed at sides. At the buzzer pick up the AK and shoot 3 IPSC targets (10-15yds away) with at least 2 rounds each. Table the AK and run 75 yds to your pistol or their Beretta M9 (2 mags on the table one with 6 rounds the other with 4 rounds). Pistol is unloaded, shoot 5 IPSC targets IDPA style 1 shot each once every one has 1 round only then can you shoot the second round at the target., table the pistol and run 75yds to your shotgun or their Benelli M4. Shotgun is loaded with 9 rounds you shoot 4-5 clays and several poppers. One popper launches a clay (I missed the damn clay). Once done there table the shotgun and run 75yds to your rifle (or their M16A4 w/RCO ACOG). Pick up your rifle, load it and get on the simulated rooftop and shoot at 5 green Ivan targets which were at distances from 150yds to 300yds. I went one for one on the Ivan.

Thanks to Robb and Dr. Tex for the pics!

Congrats on winning a new scope, Robb!

And don’t worry about your Jag, that will buff right out.

Looks cool! When is the next one?

Sorry this might be a bit off topic, but how does one achieve that pattern on the FS2000? It’s badass.

I was supposed to compete in this. I went to the training day and everything but the Big, Green Weenie struck and I was stuck as duty driver. Man, I’m pissed! The 3 other guys on my team all had a great time, though.

Congrats on your victory, Robb!

Pete did that freestyle, it took him hours upon hours to get that. I don’t have that much patience spraying stuff like that.

Thanks it was a great match. I have some ideas about stage designs for future matches hosted by the Combat Shooting Team that I’ll give to Gunny Dare. These ideas include belt-feds and submachine guns.

I like the sound of that. Maybe have a MG mounted in a HMMWV or MRAP turret…

Is there a link I can go to that has the scores posted?

That really was a cool match. Congrats on your finish Robb. All of us lower shooters are still anxious to see the full results. Jim, George, and I shot it Friday PM. We all had a great time! The only thing that could have made it better would have been Mark LaRue’s BBQ!

That looks awesome! Congrats on your great finish.

Someday, someday, someday…

Although they didnt categorize us except for Mil/LE/Civ, Id like to see how the people that shot all of the standard issue weapons did compared to each other.

Its hard to compare scores with someone using their own race gear to someone using the free kit.

But who wants to shoot their own ammo when you can shoot ammo that belongs to someone else? Not me.

Great pics Dr Texan!

It would be interesting, if it were a match where prizes weren’t being given out I probably would shoot all their stuff. There was two divisions, Tactical Optics and Tactical Irons, I don’t know if anyone actually shot Tactical Irons. I would have but wasn’t able to get a nice dead nuts on outdoor 200yd zero before the match so I shot Tactical Optics.
My own ammo was well worth it (I shot less than $100 worth), I won a $500 Leupold scope and $100 worth of PMAGs. The match winner won a S&W M&P pistol. The top two military guys each won a Trijicon ACOG TA11 with a USMC eagle, globe and anchor on them (these could only go to military guys).

To be honest I didnt think there would be such a considerable prize table. I heard last year that the prize table was nixed, which is the main reason i opted for a mil-fam 3gun.

Though I did walk away with a Benchmade Styker thanks to the support of VA Arms. Thanks again!

Very cool that you got one of the prizes my boss donated for the match!
Yes last year was different. This year the base didn’t give out the prizes a civilian did.

Here are the results for the quantico 3 gun match!

Congradulations on 1st place Robb!,

Noel

Thanks Noel that was a great match. I hope there’s one in the fall too.
Later,
Robb
