I thought most departments would call off a chase if it was deemed too high risk? Though I suppose at 190 mph, the chase didn’t have to last that long.
Though the flying tackle made for good footage. Wouldn’t the more prudent thing to do would be to carefully approach the biker with weapon drawn ordering him to the ground? Just in case the biker had a weapon himself and wanted to have a violent confrontation with law enforcement. Oregon has it’s share of “scissorbills” on the freeways.
In a separate incident earlier Saturday in Puyallup, Wash., a 24-year-old man was killed in a crash on his motorcycle after police said he was traveling more than 100 miles per hour. The man crashed his motorcycle into a sedan and was thrown 440 feet.
440 FEET? Thats over 145 yards!! For reference, that would mean flying in the air before going through one goal post in an NFL stadium and continue flying through the other goal post on the opposite end of the field. Is that correct?
Article says they spotted him at 0015 and they tackled the guy at 0119. Considering he went 73 miles…that’s not really that fast. I wonder what the heck happened.
I’m surprised they actually pursued him. Around here they just flash their lights, you twist the throttle, and they shut the lights off.
Just gotta hope they don’t get your plates or they’ll be waiting for you when you get home.
They might have included the distance traveled while he lost control, flight distance, multiple cartwheels, somersaults upon landing, and finally coming to rest!
In reference to the biker in the OP. 4.8 gal. tank, 73 miles traveled, = 15.2 MPG. Very interesting…!
I investigated an accident where a vehicle was only traveling 135 MPH and the accident scene was over 900 feet long and the debris field was 75 feet wide.
Speed can equal unreal distances during traffic accidents, especially those involving motorcycles.
The vast majority of municipal law enforcement agencies around these parts have put policies in place that terminate pursuits unless they are after a fleeing subject who is suspected of a felony resulting in serious bodily injury and or death. DPS State Troopers march to the beat of a different drummer lol.
A good example of this was back in '09 when a black suspect claiming he was a victim of racial bias in this country car-jacked and held a white female truck driver hostage in her own rig. The police chase went through three counties and dozens of cities. DPD SWAT had their Bearcats drive behind the rig on both sides, snipers in the turrets for several hours (low speed chase). Once the big rig cleared Fort Worth city limits (the last city before rural area) the State Troopers took over and shot out the trucks tires and radiator. Then they filled the cabin with CS gas and the ordeal was over.
