What is a split time for a typical milspec rifle? How do they compare to race guns?
Split times, like time between shots? Is there a standard way to measure this? I’d guess that ammo selection would make a huge difference.
Split times mean nothing without keeping score. I’ll bet I could bang a 0.01 with the but on the bench and muzzle pointed at the sky!
Are you talking about the difference in times i.e. 2Gun/3Gun/Carbine competition between shooters using a Competition rifle vs a Milspec M4?

Yes between shots. At the range a couple weeks ago we were comparing split times on the shot timer and the absolute fastest either of us could get was .16. I was wondering if that’s the mechanical limit of a milspec rifle and how that compares the race guns. This really has no bearing on anything other than curiosity.
I’d speculate that “raceguns” would typically be a few tenths of a second faster than a milspec rifle for obvious reasons. Having comps/brakes, competition-type optics vs milspec irons/optics, etc gives competetion rifles the edge but only in that arena. Milspec guns e.g. Colt’s/BCM/DD would undeniably be more reliable in reality.
How much split time depends on the shooter. To really determine specific numbers, you’d have to let one shooter shoot the same stage with both rifles and see the difference in split times.
Assume you’re speaking of an AR platform, as “mil spec” usually has burst or auto… Which probably has a wicked fast split time
That would be a factor, but I doubt anyone runs a Select-Fire rifles in competitions. I’ve never seen anyone do it, but someone post a link if you’ve seen someone do it at a local match.
Around .13-.15 if just going for speed with an actual M4A1 trigger on semi.
Fastest I’ve done with an SD3G was around .12 during a half and half. I don’t really spend much effort on collecting data for single target pair splits though.

Best I’ve done with a stock, work issue, Sig m4clone was .12, couldn’t do it again, .13 consistently though.
I meant civilian semi milspec, like 6920, BCM, or in my case LMT with a SD3G.
1000rpm is about 0.06s for full auto reference. Next time out I’ll time the rifle. Best with pistol was .16 with a striker. Fastest could pull.
I’d expect the SD3G to help a bit with the splits, I’d hardly consider an otherwise stock rifle milspec.
With a stock trigger I’ve gotten .15 at very close targets.
Using a 6970 w milspec trigger shooting drills at 7 yards shooting for speed on a 6" target, using a fast 6 count cadence shooting, I was regularly getting .17-.15 second splits with few misses which IMHO is fast enough for self defense. Jerry Miculek w a comp gun would be a lot faster I’m sure.

During the Sig Academy Master Rifle Instructor Course, I was getting .13 with my DD MK18. That does have a Geissele SSA trigger in it. The only reason I know is because Sig Academy makes you shoot every stage for a “par” time. You have to hit every time and pass the Qual at the end to get a Master Certificate.
As mentioned the weapon system itself in USGI configuration will support a cyclic rate that will produce split times that are faster than what 99.999% of any human can clock pulling a trigger in semi auto. Actual split time results shooting semi-auto by a human is dependent on that particular human who is pulling the trigger. Race guns don’t necessarily equate to faster split times if we go off of just pure cyclic rate as the human is the limiting factor and not the system, ammo or trigger. However race guns do lend to faster split times when incorporating precision / accuracy standards. Also “race” or “competition” triggers do not automatically mean faster split times, but they can greatly reduce trigger finger fatigue and can produce more consistent results over longer periods of shooting time.
I have done extensive testing on this with topic with a timer and I have tracked my results over many years, so I have tons of data. At one time I had a video that was public where I did a head to head test shooting the VTAC 1-5 and the VTAC Half and Half, with a S3G trigger and a factory USGI. 100% hits was necessary. I run/ran consistent .11-.13’s on these drills no matter the trigger, however I actually had the fastest split times of my life with the USGI clocking a .10 split twice. The fastest I could get the S3G during that testing was .11, but I hit that split much more often than with the USGI.
The difference in split times between factory and modified totally depends on the trigger – namely its weight and travel distance. Lighter and shorter will allow for faster split times. Of course what really matters is what your split times are when actually getting hits. That will of course vary by target size and distance, and can be shortened with a brake/comp, heavier gun, smoother buffer/gas setup, lighter loaded ammo, and good optics, in addition to a good trigger.
