Spare BCG? parts for my carbine

Thinking of buying some spare parts for my 6920, I don’t know if these parts will ever be hard to come by, but either way if I need them I want to have them. What spare parts should I keep on hand and where to buy them? I know the one is none saying, but since im broke bastard I better make the most outta my one!

Simplest: spare BCG and lower parts kit.
Cheapest: spare extractor, spring and pin and firing pin. Or complete bolt and firing pin.
You can always have more spares but those seem to be most useful.
If you start taking the bolt apart you will want spare ejector and spring and such. They seem to like to go flying into another county.

Just buy an entire unit. They may be a little hard to come by these days but even though money is tight its the way to go.

CMMG also sells some spare parts packs with different contents such as springs, pins, etc. I am not sure how good the parts are as I am not personally familiar with them, but they are the only kits set up like this that I have seen and I am probably going to snag some.

Bravo Company has some parts as well

There is WAY TOO MANY fookin spare bolt Carrier groups being bought these days. It’s getting ridiculous.

I’ve NEVER heard of a carrier wearing out or failing. The worst I’ve seen is a key bolt breaking. And that is a repairable scenario.

An extra bolt might be nice. But AGAIN… how often to you read of bolt failure? ALMOST NEVER.

Bolt failure must be pretty rare, but a complete bolt at $40-$50 keeps all the bolt parts available and if you have a 6920 the few dollars difference probably doesn’t mean much. Certainly extractor, spring and ejector and spring are useful.
At least I’ve lost more than one ejector. Well, I do have an idea where they might be.

I actually had a bolt break. I was really suprised. I will look around and see if I still have the pics.

It happens… but not to the extent that people are shitting themselves over.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but for a 6920, you can only use a lower parts kit from colt because of the larger trigger group pins right? Obviously bolt release, saftey lever and other parts are interchangeable, but the trigger group is the main part of the kit.

I believe you are correct, Sir!

Fortunately, however, Colt hammers and triggers are too expensive for goofballs to hoard. Brownells and S.A.W. would have replacement part for those guns.

Several companies sell spare parts kits. I have one I bought from Bushmaster years ago that contains spare disconnector, hammer, hammer and trigger springs and pins, cam pin, firing pin, takedown detents and springs, extractor, spring, and insert, and bolt rings.

Turns out the one part I ended up needing was a gas key. I was cleaning my carbine and dropped the carrier right on the gas key. It bent and I was not able to straighten it out. Bravo Company was out but I was finally able to find one at the gun show.
However, that carbine was useless for about six weeks. I’m keeping another key and screws in my spare parts box from now on.

I’ve also added a spare buffer, spring, collapsible stock, and MagPul followers.

thanks markm. I have a couple 6920’s, and after scouring for LPK’s and trying to order grants kit, it dawned on me that I needed a colt kit. SAW sells for $175, a little high, but an LMT kit is only a few bucks less in comparison.

Give us an overview of that kit when you get it.

I’m just a rookie - hell, I aspire to become a rookie, so my questions may seem foolish and my observations may seem unimportant, but here goes…

The idea of spare parts makes a lot of sense, regardless of the political climate, but why a complete LPK? Do these items ever actually need replacement due to breakage, ware, or loss? I always thought a LPK was only needed if one were building a lower from scratch.

On a side note, I just received my new LMT Defender lower. (Thanks Grant). Actually, it’s still at the FFL - I haven’t seen it yet. Do I need a LPK for this?

My other rifle is a Bushmaster. I was thinking of ordering their complete spare parts kit. For $40 it has every spring, pin, and do-dad, but it’s not a LPK. I know many here don’t think too highly of Bushmasters, but it’s what I’ve got, and I would like to keep it running. Anyone have any o0pinion on their spare parts kit?

As for people buying BCG’s needlessly, I have a spare FN bolt for my BM, but I decided to order a spare LMT carrier to go with it. My stock BM carrier is properly staked, but I figured if my bolt ever broke, it would be when I was shooting. Hopefully while at the range and not when someone was shooting back at me, but if it were, I figured it would be a lot quicker to install a complete BCG than try and install a spare bolt.

The spare BCG goes with my spare loaded mags, and is designed to be installed as a single unit, regardless of what part on the BCG failed.

I ordered a LMT SA BCG for my LMT/BCM rifle, but no spare yet. This new rifle will need additional mags and ammo before I worry about a spare BCG.

Excellent point. Buying a complete LPK is a complete waste.

I agree with this statement. But I’m also a huge subscriber to Murphys, and as such kind of a belt and suspenders guy. So my plan is to have 1 LPK on hand for murphy, and a spare parts kit or two on hand for pm. SAW also sells a spare parts kit as well.

Here is a recent thread to help explain why a complete lower parts kit makes sense:

The question was what parts to have. Probably most everyone will agree with the extractor/ejector ideas. The thread link shows why other parts might be useful, especially if you do any work on these rifles. Parts get lost, springs get bent/twisted, etc.
You don’t have to agree at all, but having an extra set of parts doesn’t seem like an issue to me. I don’t plan on carrying them everywhere I go.

In fact, unless you break or lose something you don’t need any spares.

I agree that an LPK is pretty much a waste of $ unless you’re building a new rifle. But I do believe that a spare bolt for each barrel is necessary. Bolts do crack around the cam pin hole and the lugs do wear to the point that headspace is an issue. Of course we’re talking well into the 15,000 to 20,000 round area generally.

That is just what I have been looking for. And they are Colt parts, too.
