Will a M1S bolt work in a S&W 5.45x39 upper? I want to get a spare but I don’t think S&W will sell just the bolts.
My understanding is it should (YMMV).
Well that’s what I was after too. I’m building a 5.45x39 upper from parts and I too needed a bolt. I thought how bad can they be (M1S)? So I called them and they want $80.00 for the bolt She says would you like a firing pin too? I says no thanks. She tells me that their 5.45 F/P’s are larger and so is the F/P hole in the bolt face of course. I ask how much? She says $20.00 more for a single F/P! So at $80 for the bolt & $20 for the F/P you are looking at a hundred dollar bill and it has not even been shipped yet.
I ended up paying a machinist $25 to open up a .223/556 Colt bolt I had in my parts box. I just sent it out the other day but if you are interested I’ll report back as to how it turned out.
I’m looking forward to this upper because the surplus 5.45 ammo NEW is cheaper than what I can RELOAD .223 for. A win-win situation. I suspect I will practice with the 545 rifle and unfortunately fire my 556 carbine a lot less due to the high price of components.
Best of luck on you 545 project.

S&W said that they would sell you a bolt? I called them 2 weeks ago and they told me that the don’t sell spare bolts for the 5.45?
No one said S&W is selling bolts to anyone. What gave you you the impression that S&W was selling just the bolt?

I’m sorry, in my excitement I misread your post.
the c/s people ckd for me and they will when they get caught up with orders
probably in about 6 months as far as they are behind
i am in the industry tho i dont sell guns and talk to them regularly to order stuff
just hang on its coming
Good info. I hadn’t got around to even ordering one. I wonder if I call S&W LE and tell them this is my training gun if they’ll sell me a bolt…
