For those that seem to be questioning the Vltor A5 extension I suggest you read through some of the discussions about them and why they exist.
Every single person whom I have shown the A5 to and allowed to try out has noticed a difference. You need to understand what makes it a good idea. I think too many people are poo-pooing it without reading or trying it first hand.
I got one tube from a member here, and after looking at some high speed video on youtube, I spent some coin at Bravo, now I need that new GoPro for some 180 frame filming to test all my setups vs the A5.
I ran mine and didn’t notice much of a difference. But I do run an H3 or H2 buffer so that probably is a wash. If you’re replacing your H buffer setup the difference is probably more dramatic.
When they were introduced on arfcom the word was they were requested by the marines.
Back on topic: Seriously, I was leery of the less expensive tubes myself as I only buy quality gear and thought I’d give the DSA tube a try. So far it has functioned fine.
If somebody can tell me how the $40 tubes are $20 better, other than name, I’m all ears.
A few questions on DSA… Diameter and subjective human feel aside, what is it about their RE that has lead you to conclude they are at par with the known quality ones? What are their exact specs? WHat alloy do they use? How are their milspec stocks manufactured?
On the A5, You’re completely missing the point. While true that if one were running an H2 or H3 prior to switching, he wouldn’t necessarily feel a difference in recoil. However, the A5 is not a comp. It was not designed to reduce felt recoil. That is simply a side benefit. Plus, the H2 and 3 are merely bandaids for the carbine system in that they slow the cycling down, hence the softer impulse. What you’re getting with the A5 on top of the cyclic rate slowing, is consistency, particularly in bolt velocity thanks to the rifle spring.
I bought one a while back and installed it only to find the lip either engaged the buffer retaining plunger too much where I couldn’t index it, or barely at all.
The difference between the thread on a DSA tube compared to the tube I bought from Bravo Company are night and day.
Seeing the world of difference with the quality, I’ll never buy a “just as good” part again.
Grow up. Your avatar is someone giving the universal sign for “Fuck You”. We’re all big boys here.
It does not take much searching to see why 7 series AL is much stonger in applications like this than 6 series. Companies use 6 because it is much cheaper. They may look the same and function the same in a range environment, but what happens when you fall down on/step on one? $20 to me is a good sandwich with fries and a beer for lunch, so it’s insane for me to not spend the same to build a rifle which will I will likely have for my lifetime up to the specifications it was designed to have. Most things are cheaper for a reason, and it usually has little to do with a name.
I’ve probably just had too much Kool-Aid though:rolleyes:
