SOPMOD Stocks...can you tell me about them?

are they light or heavy…any negatives? whats a good price range?

They are slightly heavier than a standard M4 stock. The balance of the gun is improved with the added weight of batteries in compartments. This helps to counter are the junk we hang off the front of the gun.

The cheek weld is excellent and it is the most comfortable stock I have used (although I have not used the new E-Mod or the Magpul UBR).

Some people don’t like the straight but pad and prefer the angled pad as found on the M4 and Vltor stocks. It does not bother me.

New around $195 is probably as cheap as you will find it. If you are patient, you should be able to find one on the used market from about $125 to $150.

I weighed some stocks last week:

These are just the stock bodies no buffer, spring, receiver extension or nut and plate.

CTR stock 7.56oz
CTR stock w/rubber pad 8.79oz
VLTOR stock non-clubfoot 7.76oz
VLTOR E-MOD 13.81oz
LMT M4 stock 6.80oz
LMT SOPMOD stock 11.05oz

The LMT SOPMOD stock is heavy compared to other stocks but very durable. Some users with facial hair complain about other stocks that can pinch them. The stock does not have and cheek well height adjustment but the cheek hold is very well designed. This stock closely resembles the stock Colt built for the ACR program that was never produced. The stock must be removed from the buffer tube to access the batery compartment which does not bother me.The controlls on this stock(release) is in the same place as the standard stock and operates the same way as a standard stock (which many users like). In my opinion it is one of the best stocks out there when weight is not an issue. It has just enough features but is not over complicated. The battery compartment can be used to store other things like cleaning supplies .Otis(or someone) should make a kit specific for this stock.

As III mentions, facial hair can be an issue with some stocks. The one class I did with an Vltor kept tearing up my moustache.

My ARs have either the LMT SOPMod or M/P CTR stocks. Bought of each individually and the others came with the weapons they are on.

It’s a comfortable stock with the rubber pad but it’s damn expensive for some injection molded plastic…

I have switched to the SOPMOD stock, it provides me with a good cheek weld and the non slip rubber plate does not slip around. Expensive!!!, but to me worth it. Keep in mind that I have not tried the CTR, only the stock one…

I like it because it is a bit longer. I can get a good NTCH weld without pulling the stock out at all. With the standard CAR stock I was always out a notch.

I have become a EMOD convert but the SOPMOD is no slouch.

The SOPMOD stock has a very nice cheek weld, the best from the stocks I’ve tried.

I have as of late grown a bit of a beard and had the pull/pinch problem. I used 100mph tape and the problem is solved. I have seen others use a bit more ingenuity and rig a cover/cheek pad that looked pretty good also. I use an LMT MRP rifle length and really enjoy the contour and position the SOPMOD stock places my head in relation to mounted scopes. I am a nose to charging handle type. I will also say that I am a big fan of the Sully Stock also. I hope you get to shoulder a few stocks to help you decide what fits and will work for you.

I had the VLTOR for a few years and liked it alot… but once I got a SOPMOD… I sold off the VLTOR and never looked back…

Excellent hard use stock with good storage… excellent cheek weld and a solid built in Rubber pad pad to keep the stock from slipping off my gear…

I only run two AR’s… one has a SOPMOD… the other a Magpul CTR…

The only thing I can add is most everyone who tells me I’m crazy for spending that much on a stock, winds up buying one after using one of mine. They fit me perfectly and have a fairly tight fit on the tube. They’re worth it to me but as with anything you need to try one for yourself.

For me it is the most comfortable stock to shoot. The cheeck weld and eye alignment seem more natural when shooting my ShortDot. I have a fluted heavy Mike Rock barrel on that rifle and the SOPMOD balances the rifle out.

From my understanding the Magpul UBR is going to be a little more, price wise, than the SOPMOD and it doesn’t have the cheek weld. However the UBR is bult like a tank or better yet, a battleship. I will weight an UBR this week for comparison to GotM4’s post.
