Sending child molesters to El Salvador or Sudan never to be seen again sounds like a great idea to me.
Occasionally, the idea of a desert prison colony for the anyone who committed less than murder but worst than (something much less) comes to mind. Literally let them make their own way like the Brits did in Australia. They win, we win. They’re still American but earning and building a new society. Or not. But less of our problem and certainly not heavily subsidized. Maybe buy some desert land in Mexico.

But Rubio talked to the El Presidente of El Salvador about the taking of their and maybe other illegals- and their president threw in the ‘bonus’ of taking US citizen criminal prisoners. But if I understand the whole process, Rubio should have been the one to shut that crap down. He’s the adult in the room.

I think it is the joke(or a guy can dream) thread about deportation for poor driving. It opened a discussion on normally aspirated/turbo charged/super charged engines.
You can’t argue that Bukele hasn’t made a big difference in El Salvador with his crackdown on gangs. Homicide rate is down 98%, other crime stats as well. Extortion payments to the gangs that were once commonplace are going away.
Are there some legitimate human rights issues being raised? Absolutely, not gonna claim otherwise. Thing is though, El Salvador was on the brink of becoming a failed state. MS-13 and their rival the Surenos arguably had more control between them than the government.
For the first time since at least the 1970’s there might be some light at the end of the tunnel for El Salvador. Unless Bukele falls back to the abuses of past Salvadoran regimes. Fingers crossed!
Could taking him up on his offer to incarcerate criminal foreign nationals be a good thing for the US? I think the idea has merit and should be looked at. These criminal aliens serving time for their offenses in American prisons have reach outside the prisons through their gang networks, prison is merely an inconvenience. When they get out they are slated for deportation, but what will the political landscape look like then? Incarceration in El Salvador with deportation to their home country following their release seems like a reasonable option for foreign nationals.
US Citizen inmates? While I can certainly identify with that on an emotional level, I think it is a non-starter. For one thing these are “our criminals”, dealing with them is our responsibility. Not to mention the civil rights issues and the potential for abuse. Dumping them into foreign prisons as a combination convenience/cost savings/foreign aid measure would be wrong. If we want to “get tough” on them fine, do it here. In the light of day.

Have you talked to naturalized citizens much? In my experience they are often more educated and conversant in constitutional/civics matters than the average born in the USA type. Just sayin.

Sure, Trump is President and sits in the Oval Office, but if he’s not careful Musk is going to do real, tangible damage to parts of the government that do need to keep running. Nobody here is a fan of bloated bureaucracy but if my friends and family can’t get their VA healthcare or disability payments it’s going to be a bad time.
Well WAY before the VA is looked at and/or cut there are quite a few other programs that would take priority. Sure, there is some fraud in the VA disability system but SSDI (the disability SS, not the regular one you get at 62+) actually costs the taxpayer a little more each year than the VA one does. That should come well before the VA on any witch hunt.
I sometimes raise an eyebrow at the power DOGE may or may not have been given, but the best way is to scrutinize exactly what they might suggest before blindly following their recommendations. Like what the POTUS is supposed to do, since the buck stops with him. I do think, however, that a significant amount of graft and fat can be cut from the Federal budget. No one is going to turn around the deficit on a dime, it’s going to be a l-o-n-g process.
I’m not sure any agency or program is going to be as thoroughly corrupted as USAID appears to be, but they owe it to the taxpayers to do a forensic level examination of every last one of them.
Anyone whose signature is on the final line of an obvious fraud needs to be fired immediately. IDGAF how important they appear to be, they can’t be trusted to do the right thing.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t know how DOGE was possibly going to make a dent in the swamp. I should’ve known Elon would bring in the egghead army and use algorithms to find the parasites. The speed at which he’s finding them and their grift programs is dizzying but that just means the left can’t keep up.
